Flight & Flying [Friday, second period]

Anakin didn't apologize for his behavior, you know, ever.

But he was noticeably more calm than he'd been the week before as the class met in the Danger Shop ~~like he'd totally emailed them about, really~~.

"Today we're going to try something a little different," he said quietly, pointing to two motorcycle-esque machines hovering before him. "This is a swoop bike," he said, pointing to one, "and the one on the left is a speeder bike, the slightly newer model, which is also equipped with a laser cannon. Don't use the laser cannon, please. Both fly like the motorcycles of your world drive, but can get up to 400 kilometers an hour. That being said, you will be wearing helmets --" fortunately for the class, much more attractive than the Nubian ones from the previous week, "--and there are two different scenarios based on your level of skill. One is a desert planet with nothing to hit. The second is a forest moon with trees hundreds of meters tall."

He gave Luke a small smile. "Please don't hit a tree and explode. There'd be paperwork. Next week, we'll be meeting at my shuttle and doing some actual space flight. If you hurt my ship, I'll be unhappy. If you demonstrate today you don't have the maturity to fly responsibly, you won't be asked to come along." He stared hard at each student. "Questions?"

She'd listened to the radio enough to know that it had happened. "I'm sorry," she says, trying to look neutral but wincing a little.

"It...didn't go well. She didn't throw things or yell," --which Anakin would've known how to handle-- "it was just so strained. Distant."

He stared off into nothing.

"Horrible."

She's not saying much, but she's not one to dispense advice on this subject. "How are you doing?"

"On a normal person's scale, or mine?" Anakin asked wryly.

"Is there a point to the first one?" she asks, just as wryly. "Yours, of course."

Anakin thought of the conversation with Leia, the complete lack of anything like a kiss from Rory, and the anniversary of Padmé's birthday.

"I'd had better weeks," he understated. "But I'm getting better."

"Good," Aeryn says quietly. "June's already half over."

Anakin bit his lip, suddenly thinking of something.

"...and when do you leave?" he asked quietly.

"After the first session sometime. I'm not sure of the exact date yet," she shrugs. "Haven't given it much thought. Don't tell me you're already thinking about that."

Anakin shrugged uncomfortably. "I'm trying to prepare for goodbyes. It's been a long time since I've cared much about anything."

"Speaking for two of us, I'll be a few arns away and I have a ship. Maybe even a car," she says. "Goodbye's hardly even accurate." She might be trying to convince herself of that, but she's also awesome at denial.

"You won't be around to glare at me when I'm being an ass," Anakin said, giving her a faint smile, "so you'll be too far away."

"I'm sure I'll hear about it," she says. "In which case you will have calls interrupting your classes. Does that help?"

It really did.

He nodded.

"How have you been?" he asked, anxious to change the subject.

"All right," she says. "I got a visit from some of John's students and I have to go dress shopping soon. I haven't killed anyone yet, so I think that's a good thing."

"A very good thing," Anakin agreed. "If she--they--get to be too much... let me know, okay?"

"Thanks. I don't think it'll be too big a problem, actually," she says. "Rory's been very good about things so far, and I'll have Sam with me, so I don't think intervention will be too necessary."

Which is not to say Rory and Isabel wouldn't clash over plans or Molly would want pink bridesmaid dresses or Faithful might come in Alanna's place, but still.

He ran a hand through his hair. "It's not like I exactly have a special in with her these days, anyway," he admitted, "or know how weddings work when you can tell people about them."

"She'd probably listen," Aeryn says. "And here apparently when you get married alone where no one knows, there's Elvis."

"...how does he find out about them?" Anakin asked carefully. "Is he like Santa?"

"...He might be. I have no idea," she says slowly. "He must be busy, though."

Anakin nodded. "I'd imagine so. Maybe he has clones."

"I think I managed to make it clear that it's not happening anyway. I have limits."

"I think that's a good line to draw. No jumpsuits in general is another one."

She stared. "Jumpsuits? Why jumpsuits?"
