Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

Around dinner time on Friday, the main campfire was transformed. Leis and grass skirts were available to all. A pig was roasting kabobs. There was Hawaiian music playing from somewhere. There was also a limbo stick of doom. If you lost, you died.

Okay, that was just Drax's hope. He couldn't make it happen in reality. Woe.

[OOC: FRIDAY SPECIAL EVENTS BEGIN ANEW! Students, instructors, and townies are all welcome.

Also, I turned off notifications, zomg.]

Karal wasn't certain why he was there, but he was, wearing his lightest robes and sitting where he could watch the fire.

Altra was somewhere, circling around the outside of the luau, but he wasn't likely to appear unless he was needed. Or someone wanted to feed him.

"Hi Karal," Isabel smiled, taking a seat next to him. "Having fun?"

He smiled over at her, only blushing a little bit, given how little everyone else was wearing. "Hello, Isabel. I think I am," he replied. "The fire is very pleasant and everyone seem to be enjoying themselves. Including yourself?"

"I am," she said, even if she occasionally missed some of the people that were at last year's luau. "There's marshmallows, how could I not?"

"Marshmallows are something good?" he asked. "I'm not familiar with them."

"There a type of candy," Isabel explained. "And very sweet. It's a tradition to roast them over a fire like this. Wait here a minute and I'll show you."

She ran off for a moment and returned with two marshmallow sticks and a plate of marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers.

"First, you put the marshmallow on the stick," she told Karal, handing them to him and demonstrating on her own.

He watched closely and copied her motions exactly. "It is rather sticky," he said, staring at the squishy white marshmallow, some of which was now squished across his thumb.

"It is," she agreed. "And it'll only get stickier as it cooks. Now you want to hold the marshmallow over the fire like this. Too close and it'll catch fire and burn."

"It's raw?" he asked, shifting closer to the fire so he could lower his stick into the flame.

Inara took a seat near the boy watching the fire and curled her legs under her, moving her skirt so it didn't accidentally catch fire. She smiled, but was content to just watch the flames flicker for a while.

Karal glanced over and smiled, shy but welcoming, and nodded a hello, not wishing to disturb her if she was seeking solitude.

"Hello," she leaned forward a little, towards the light, "I'm Inara. I hope I'm not bothering you?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Karal," he replied, ducking his head slightly. "And not at all. I was wary of disturbing you."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] ambassadorinara.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"If I didn't want to be disturbed, I wouldn't be around people," she said, smiling. "It's nice to meet you, Karal."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"And you, Inara." He smiled. "Though it could be you'd had your fill of people, at least for the moment, and were seeking a brief moment of solitude. In which case it would have been rude of me to interrupt."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] ambassadorinara.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, a brief moment of solitude," she said, almost wistfully, "I'm not sure that is possible. And no one who appreciates that could be rude. Are you a new student?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I am, yes. Though the new feeling is beginning to wear off slightly, which I didn't think would happen." He drew his knees up and folded his arms around them. "The beach is good if you're seeking solitude, or the stables," he added. "Though you have to share them with a horse. May I ask, are you new as well?"

Parker wandered over, sipping a drink out of a coconut. "Hey, Karal. How did you first week here go?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
He had been lost in the flames, mind elsewhere, and he startled at his name, blinking up at her for a moment. "Hello, Parker," he said, tipping his head back to smile up at her, blushing at her outfit and simply accepting it as inevitable until he became more accustomed to so little clothing. "For the most part, I believe it went well. Thank you for asking."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Parker took the seat next to him, and stretched out a little, tilting her head to look at him. "For the most part? Any outstanding problems, aside from the culture shock?"

Karal looked at her thoughtfully for a moment. "There's a man who claims he is a god teaching one of my classes, and one of my cabin mates is rather," he shifted, looking distinctly uncomfortable and flushing redder, "rather friendlier than I'm comfortable with. And Buffy was very unhappy that I'd never had ice cream, and that I suggested getting rid of her monster. Other than that, I think I'm becoming accistomed to this place."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Ares is a creep, god or no god. And worship is not mandatory," Parker said, her voice hard. Her tone lightened as she went on: "How friendly are we talking? And I'm with Buffy. No killing Berthold and oh my god you've never had ice cream? This is a tragedy!"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I did not like him. He is not a god, and claiming so is unacceptable," he said, voice just as hard, but he slumped a little as he said, "touching friendly. I'm assured he means no harm, but it was disconcerting." He shook his head and smiled at her. "I suspect you're overstating the matter slightly."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Definitions of godhood differ; I suppose he might be, according to some people," Parker said, thinking of Callisto. "But even if he is, he's an evil one.... Anyway. Ooo. Which roomie? And what happened?" She nudged him with her shoulder, smiling. "Like that, or more? And trust me, it's a tragedy. I have a friend who didn't get ice cream until he was even older than you are, and he's still bitter about it."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
"He is not a god." There was no flexibility in his voice and he glanced at her before looking back at the fire, smiling a little and blushing when she bumped his shoulder. "More," he admitted, "but a friend intervened and I believe he will not do it again. How can a failure to try a certain food be considered a tragedy?"
