Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

Around dinner time on Friday, the main campfire was transformed. Leis and grass skirts were available to all. A pig was roasting kabobs. There was Hawaiian music playing from somewhere. There was also a limbo stick of doom. If you lost, you died.

Okay, that was just Drax's hope. He couldn't make it happen in reality. Woe.

[OOC: FRIDAY SPECIAL EVENTS BEGIN ANEW! Students, instructors, and townies are all welcome.

Also, I turned off notifications, zomg.]

"No, it's perfectly edible in it's natural state. Cooking just makes it nice and warm and gooey," Isabel smiled. "And once it's like that, I'll show you how to make it even better with a little chocolate and some cookies."

"Thank you, Isabel," he told her. This was surprisingly enjoyable, in an odd way. "I appreciate you showing me."

"It's my sacred duty to share the joy that is marshmallows," she told him, watching carefully to make sure her own marshmallow didn't turn into a torch.

Startled, he glanced over at her. "Sacred duty?" he asked, then shook his head at himself. "You're teasing me, aren't you?"

There was something about Karal that prevent Isabel from teasing him too badly. "Yes, I am. Shouldn't I?"

"Sunlord, no!" he said hurriedly. "No, not at all! It simply is not something that I'm used to." He ducked his head and smiled shyly. "I don't mind it in the least."

"Good. You'll have to get used to it around here. Most people are pretty relaxed," she said. "And there's a lot of teasing between friends."

Isabel pulled her marshmallow back and inspected it. It wasn't quite gooey enough so she stuck it back in the fire.

He smiled into the flames, warmed from the inside out by her words, and stared carefully at his marshmallow. It was starting to look rather dark. "How do I know when it is done?"

"That's just about perfect," Isabel said, glancing over. Her own was finally done. "Since this is your first marshmallow, try it plain. Then next one will be a s'more." After blowing and making sure it was cool enough, Isabel bit hers off the stick.

He pulled the stick from the flames and tentatively touched the side of the marshmallow, testing for heat. It felt safe enough, so he slid it free and nibbled the corner. "Sweet!" And sticky.

"Very," Isabel nodded. "It's concentrated sugar on a stick. The next one will be even better because it'll have chocolate."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
This was the sweetest thing he had ever tasted - he was used to honey and sometimes sugar - and he could not imagine adding chocolate to it.

"Chocolate is not something I have tried very often. It is quite a luxury back home," he said as he finished the marshmallow as carefully as he could, trying not make everything sticky.

"Not that much chocolate?" Isabel asked horrified. "It's a vital food group!"

She popped another marshmallow on her stick and handed him the bag.

"Buffy was extremely concerned when she believed that my world did not have chocolate," he explained as he fitted marshmallow to stick and returned it to the fire. "Does it have some significance here beyond its taste?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"It's a comfort food," she explained. "It can be a luxury. I mean certain types are very expensive so you'd never eat them every day. But there's enough chocolate that's both good and inexpensive...Well when you're upset about something most people will automatically reach for it."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"It is a luxury in Karse, and quite expensive." Given it was made from plants grown in Valdemar, that wasn't surprising. "I don't believe it was ever used for that purpose, but I can understand why Buffy was so worried. She thought I'd been deprived of comfort."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly." Isabel wasn't about to get into a discussion of chocolate and female hormones even though watching Karal blush would be cute. "I'll have to drop some by for you. I always have a stash in my dresser."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Thank you, that would be wonderful." Karal stopped paying attention to his marshmallow while he turned to smile at Isabel, and when he glanced back it was on fire. "Glory!" he exclaimed and pulled it out to start blowing on it frantically.

"You should try that," she said once the flames were out. "Some people like them crispy."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
He studied it doubtfully, glancing back at Isabel, but tried it. "It's interesting," he finally said. "But not quite to my taste. May I have another?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I'm not a fan of crispy either." Isabel handed over the bag. "You can have as many as you want. Just be warned, too many will make you very bouncy."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
For lack of anything else to do with it, he tossed the crisped marshmallow back into the fire, and took another. "Bouncy?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Hyper, excited, giddy, energetic," she listed. "It's from all the sugar." Her marshmallow was ready so she pulled it off the fire and started to make a s'more. "Watch what I do so you can do it."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Bouncy, yes! I've seen that. Sometimes the highborn children would be given honey sweets and, well, yes, became quite bouncy," he said, shaking his head as he watched her carefully.

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Too many of these and you'll be just as bouncy." Isabel frowned, "Highborn? There was that much of a class difference?"
