Luau, The Main Campfire, Friday evening

Around dinner time on Friday, the main campfire was transformed. Leis and grass skirts were available to all. A pig was roasting kabobs. There was Hawaiian music playing from somewhere. There was also a limbo stick of doom. If you lost, you died.

Okay, that was just Drax's hope. He couldn't make it happen in reality. Woe.

[OOC: FRIDAY SPECIAL EVENTS BEGIN ANEW! Students, instructors, and townies are all welcome.

Also, I turned off notifications, zomg.]

Parker took the seat next to him, and stretched out a little, tilting her head to look at him. "For the most part? Any outstanding problems, aside from the culture shock?"

Karal looked at her thoughtfully for a moment. "There's a man who claims he is a god teaching one of my classes, and one of my cabin mates is rather," he shifted, looking distinctly uncomfortable and flushing redder, "rather friendlier than I'm comfortable with. And Buffy was very unhappy that I'd never had ice cream, and that I suggested getting rid of her monster. Other than that, I think I'm becoming accistomed to this place."

"Ares is a creep, god or no god. And worship is not mandatory," Parker said, her voice hard. Her tone lightened as she went on: "How friendly are we talking? And I'm with Buffy. No killing Berthold and oh my god you've never had ice cream? This is a tragedy!"

"No, I did not like him. He is not a god, and claiming so is unacceptable," he said, voice just as hard, but he slumped a little as he said, "touching friendly. I'm assured he means no harm, but it was disconcerting." He shook his head and smiled at her. "I suspect you're overstating the matter slightly."

"Definitions of godhood differ; I suppose he might be, according to some people," Parker said, thinking of Callisto. "But even if he is, he's an evil one.... Anyway. Ooo. Which roomie? And what happened?" She nudged him with her shoulder, smiling. "Like that, or more? And trust me, it's a tragedy. I have a friend who didn't get ice cream until he was even older than you are, and he's still bitter about it."

"He is not a god." There was no flexibility in his voice and he glanced at her before looking back at the fire, smiling a little and blushing when she bumped his shoulder. "More," he admitted, "but a friend intervened and I believe he will not do it again. How can a failure to try a certain food be considered a tragedy?"

"Not by my lights, or the tradition I was raised in either," Parker said, her voice even. "Of course, mine says that anyone you can actually see can't possibly be God, and you have to take His existence on pure faith... but I digress."

She cocked an eyebrow at him. "I'm glad it got worked out with the cabinmate. But don't tell me that no girls have asked you out yet? For shame! I cry for the next generation of Fandom," she added, smiling wickeldy. "And the lack of ice cream is a lack of tasting joy and sugar rush, the buzz of tasty glory and the fun of icy headaches. Pure tragedy. We must remedy this."

Ares was not a god. Karal knew this to be true, and he could feel his anger that someone would claim godhood bubbling up again. "I have Seen the Hand of Vkandis manifest. I have witnessed His miracles and seen His Avatar. I have even come to know that there are other gods who are as real as Him, who is called the One God, and that at one time would have been purest blasphemy and seen me given to the Flames as a heretic." He drew in a deep breath, staring into the flames to seek peace. "That man is not a god."

"Don't hold back, Karal, tell me how you really feel," Parker said, keeping her voice mild. Obviously this was important to the kid. "I can't address your experiences of your god, except to say you probably won't find anything comparable here. I think I'm a little jealous. Our age of miracles is mostly long ago, and far away." She took a sip of her drink, then said, "Ares hurt a friend of mine. Badly. And no, that's not a euphemism for myself. She's not here now, but it's something he bragged of, and she admitted to me. So... I don't care if he *is* a god to someone, somewhere, and getting power from worship of war and bloodlust. He's a sonuvabitch, either way. If I knew a way to kill a god..." She shrugged. "That one deserves to be extinct."

"Demon," he replied immediately, eyes dark with worry. "To feed off of pain and fear, or a blood path mage. They have visited horrors upon many." Andesha was proof of that, and his memories of Falconsbane, the Black-Robes' demons under the old Rule. "Your friend is lucky to have escaped with life and sanity intact," he said, clasping his hands tightly and staring deep into the fire. Sunlord, gentle giver of life... "He must not be allowed to harm another."

"Maybe a demon? Of some kind. Definitions for power differ. Effects matter more." Parker tilted her head, thinking of Cal's state of mind, her constant wish to die, and shook her head.

Studying Karal, she decided to dial down her concern in the hope he'd calm down a little. He had a class with Ares, and there was no way he could do anything about the bastard anyway. "He hasn't hurt a student. He's been careful about that. And I trust Principal Washburn and Vice Principal Hades to keep a strict watch on him; he's not the worst teacher we've had here. So I'd say you and the others are--" Sort of. Kind of. Relatively. "--safe. Just don't piss him off, okay? You don't need to spend a class period as a chicken."

He believed he would be safe. Altra would shield him, but the backlash... "I will watch closely. I warned him as such, and I will not," he hesitated, not certain how to explain Altra, but needing to, touched by her concern, "be alone. Vkandis is always with me."

He fell silent, lost in thought, then slowly went red as he recalled where he was. "I am sorry," he stammered. "I did not intend for this to be a lecture."

"Hey, you feel strongly about something. That's never a crime, as far as I'm concerned. Particularly when it's about right versus wrong, and protecting people." She sipped her drink, staring into the fire. "Nothing to apologize for." Parker turned to looke at him, and smiled reassuringly. "Although, you could buy me ice cream to make it up to me."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
He gave a quick nod of acknowledgement and a grateful smile. "I cannot even manage that, I'm afraid. I have not yet acquired any of the coin which is used here." Nor, he suspected, was he likely to.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Then I'll have to buy." Parker smiled mischeviously. "It's not like I'm lacking for cash, and I invited you. So tomorrow is good, around noon, right?"

She grinned at him, hoping for more flailing. Juuust a little.

He blinked and stared and went red again. "Why would you wish to have me accompany you?" he asked, not sure he'd quite understood correctly and flailing internally at the thought. Parker was both very attractive and more than a little intimidating.

"Why not?" she said gently, still teasing a little. "I like showing people new things." Parker thought of Jarod, and the fun of watching him discover new foods and distractions. "I leave on Sunday, and there's no way I'll get to know all of these new kids before I leave. But it won't feel like I'm leaving it completely behind, if I can know one of you a little better." She smiled a little more brightly. "And I like you. You make me smile. Not an easy thing, these days."

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
He looked away, smiling at her words. "It would be my privilege to accompany you," he said. "And I admit I'm curious as to what is so exciting about ice cream."

Re: Main Campfire

"Then I promise, you'll get the full experience tomorrow. Noon, and meet you-- where? Your cabin?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I need to see to Trenor in the morning, which might take some time," he said, concentrating on logistics to avoid blushing again. "Perhaps I could meet you there?"

Re: Main Campfire

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Parker grinned again, and took a long sip of her drink. "Perfect. I'll see you then, and we'll correct the tragedy of your sugar deprivation before you spend one more week in Fandom."

And it would be one last good deed to shine in a naughty, naughty world before she left.
