"Well, if you're going to be wearing it every day, it'll have to be out of a durable material," Dawn said, already thinking about the logistics, "and it should probably be blessed, just as a general precaution..."
"Definitely. Possibly in more than one way," Sam replied. "And it should be something that I can make more than once, in case you or Dean wants one too."
"He's...he's not...look, I've just started getting used to the idea that Alec is a decent person. And he is dating Dean, whether he wants to admit it or not, but...he's not family. Zoe's close to being family, and that's only because she's pregnant. Alec's still a long ways away from getting anywhere close."
"Sam..." Dawn was getting aggravated, "Principal Washburn's giving birth to your sister in a couple of months. That's like...family squared! She's giving you new family, and she obviously plans on sticking with your dad in the long-term. Family's not what you're born into--it's who acts like family, and Alec does, whether you like it or not."
"Alec will never be part of my family, no matter how he acts," Sam insisted, trying not to get angry at the thought. "Family is me, and my dad, and Dean. In the very near future, Zoe and Grace will be part of that too. But that's it. The other people we get close to are in a whole separate category."
"Well, it depends on the person. I mean, I don't want to consider you family, because that's weird and not entirely appropriate. As for Alec, I'm pretty sure he'll never be anything more than 'That guy who hunts and has sex with Dean.'"
Sam sighed softly. "I know that Alec cares more about Dean than I thought he did at the start. But Dean is the only person he cares about. If something happened to me, or my dad, he wouldn't care. And someone can't be part of a family if they don't care about everyone in it."
"He has to learn, Sam," Dawn pointed out, "He's never been part of a family before--he doesn't know how it works. And...well, I think he'd care more than you think he would, already."
"What, so you think he should get to use my family as a testing ground? That's pretty unfair to the rest of us," Sam said. "And you really haven't seen the way Alec and I interact, or you'd realize how little he'll ever care about anyone but Dean and himself."
"How is it unfair? Is he hurting your family? I'd offer him mine, but they're not here!" Dawn couldn't believe they were still fighting about Alec, "And you're full of crap, Sam. You're just as at fault for the way you interact as he is. I know he cares about me--and not because I'm having sex with him, because, wow, no, and I think he knows that, too."
"You think Alec cares about you?" Sam asked, more curious than anything else as the feeling in his gut turned to a 'this is wrong wrong wrong' type. "Why do you think that?"
