Library [04/24]

Sam still looked and felt like crap when he went to open the library, but he was pretty sure that spending the day surrounded by books would help.

"Because he talks to me and trusts me with personal stuff and is my friend?"

"He...he does?" Sam replied, suddenly feeling very, very oblivious.

"Yes." The duh was implied.

"I didn't know that," Sam admitted, in case that wasn't obvious, and he decided not to voice how much he didn't like that at all. "In that case, you should feel free to adopt him into your family, whether they're here or not. Maybe you can teach him how to be a normal person, because I doubt Dean's going to bother."

"He's already kinda there, not that there was an official ceremony or anything," Dawn told him, unsure about Sam's reaction, which seemed kinda ass-y to her, "I don't want Alec to be normal. I want Alec to be Alec."

Sam was beginning to wonder how he could have missed Alec getting close to Dawn, and he also wondered if he should start to be worried. "Knowing how to be part of a family is normal" he explained. "But even if that somehow magically happens, it's impossible for me to even imagine ever being close to Alec."

"Why? Because he's having sex with Dean?"

"No. Our personalities are just completely opposite of each other. And I can't imagine him wanting to be close to me either," Sam said. "I mean, you said yourself that family is who you want it to be."

"I don't think he doesn't like you," Dawn told Sam, "and he's not completely different from Dean, and you get along with him okay. I just...maybe you need to accept that Alec's gonna be around for a while."

"I get along with Dean because for all our differences, we're brothers, and that's more important than anything else. I've accepted the idea that if Alec and Dean are still together when Dean graduates, they're probably going to go off and hunt together. But that's the best I can do."

"Are you mad that he's going to be hunting with Dean, instead of you?"

"Not as much as I used to be, I guess," Sam admitted. "At first, I hated the idea. But now that I'm pretty positive that I won't be hunting with Dean, I don't want him to be working alone. And if Alec has to be the one by Dean's side...he's better than nothing."

"Alec's trained to be a hunter, and he'll have Dean's back," Dawn reminded him, "Dean'll be safer than if anyone but you were there with him. And they can always call for research and information long distance, right?"

"I guess. Or Dean can call just to say hi. He's not going to let me feel worthless and left out, if that's what you're worried about."

"It never occurred to me that Dean would do that," Dawn said honestly, "but I was thinking more about Dean and Alec not really being book and researchy types."

"I guess Dean would come to me if he really needed help, and couldn't find what he needed," Sam said. "I think he'll be pretty self-sufficient though. He really is a good hunter."

"I'd like to see you guys in action sometime."

Sam snickered, giving her an incredulous look. "Why?"

Dawn gave him a look back. "One, to study your methods, in case there's something I haven't seen that I could tell everyone at home about. Two, to watch you work together just to watch and learn. Three, because you're both really really hot boys and I'd like to videotape it and make lots of money by showing it to underage slayers, when I'm not watching it obsessively myself?"

"Okay, I'm willing to go with you on one and two, but you're going to need to convince me more on that third one."

"What?" She asked, trying to look innocent and probably not succeeding.

"You make it sound like Dean and I fighting would be close to pornographic," he said, making a face at her.

Dawn grinned at him, giving up on innocence for the moment. "You, Dean, fighting, guns, knives...yeah, sounds pretty close to me."

She decided not to push for shirtlessness.

"Just so you know, in case I don't tell you this often enough, you are very, very strange. But I love you anyway," Sam said.

"You're not the first person to tell me that, and I think it's genetic," Dawn said, because obviously this kind of insanity was bred to the bone, "and I love you back, which is handy."
