"It more sounded like mocking from where I was standing," he argued, but he didn't seem to mind much. "Are you going with Greg?"

"Um, actually, no," she said, her face falling a little. "We broke up a few weeks ago. I think I'll probably go alone."

Cameron winced. "Crap. I'm sorry," he sighed. "You okay?"

Isabel shrugged. "I'm not thrilled, but it was probably for the best. My life's been a bit complicated lately."

He tilted his head, regarding her for a moment. "Anything you want to talk about?"

"Long story short? We found a way back to our planet. So we went," she said, reciting the facts emotionlessly. "Through an insanely lucky coincidence, I wound up back here about five days after I left. Except for me? It had been six months in a war zone. Max and Michael are still there, and I have until August when the timelines sync up to figure out how to get back there."

"Geez," he rubbed a hand through his hair, unsure of what the right words were in reaction to that. "That... sucks. How did you get there?"

"Tell me about it," Isabel sighed. "We got there by way of a wormhole. Opened from their end. In theory, it shouldn't be a big deal to get back. If I can let them know I'm here. But I don't have a way of doing that. And they don't have a clue that I'm back here." Issues with the prom vendors suddenly paled next to this.

Cameron crouched in front of the desk, leaning his elbows on the edge as he considered it. "Have you talked to Sam or maybe even Aeryn? They might have ways of communication over such long distances. Uh, that's assuming you have an idea now as to where exactly your world is."

"It's an idea. I just have to be really careful how ever I go about. There's other issues to worry about."

"But enough about me," Isabel said, smiling brightly. Yes, denial wasn't just a river in Eygpt. "It seems like everyone is getting their acceptance letters. Have you heard anything?"

He blinked at the rapid subject change, but he didn't want to push her into talking if she didn't feel like it either. Plus, he'd really been wanting to tell her this.

"Actually I have," he said, trying to be all mysterious. It didn't really work though as he was a dork and it was hard not to smile.

The smile gave it away and Isabel bounced around the desk to hug him. "I told you you'd do it! Congratulations!"

He chuckled and hugged her back, maybe a bit tighter than he normally would. "Thank you."

"I don't think I have to ask if you're excited," she laughed, pulling away and hopping up to sit on the desk. "Does this mean you won't be sticking around for the summer?"

"Afraid not," he shook his head. "Basic Cadet Training starts in June and I was going to spend some of my free time with Veronica."

"Understandable," Isabel nodded, swinging her feet. "This place is going to be weird after you guys leave."

Cameron leaned his hip against the desk and nodded, refraining from pointing out that she was going to be leaving herself. "It's going to be weird leaving this place," he said. "I'm going to miss the invasions." He was joking, of course. Maybe.

"I know. I mean where else will you find clucking bunnies wandering around laying chocolate eggs?" she wondered. "But I get what you mean. This place is pretty special. I missed it horribly while I was gone."

"It's the people mostly," he said in a softer tone.

"Yeah, exactly," Isabel agreed. "But if you give my your address, I'll be sure to send letters for as long as I can. And take pictures if the jellow dragons come back."

Cameron laughed. "I'll do that," he promised. "They'll be taking my cell phone, I'm afraid but letters should work. I'll try emailing people with my contact information once I've settled in. Maybe if you can find a way to communicate with your world, you'll be able to use it the other way around too?"

"Letters will be good. But sadly once I leave, that'll be it," she said, trying not to let on how depressing that was. "Unfortunately the only long range communication they had involved essentially possessing people. I won't do that."

His eyes shot up and he stared at her. "You mean as in transfer your conscience or whatever into the other person's body?"

Isabel made a face, understanding how Cam might feel about that. "For periods of time yes. That's how you get people suffering from missing time who claim to be alien abductees. Which is why I want no part of it."

"Yeah, I can get that," he nodded. "But maybe if someone were to volunteer and they'd know what was going on?"
