Ethics [Monday, March 5, 5th period]

When the students entered the Ethics class, there was no sign of their normal instructor.

Instead a young man with a livid scar down his right eye wearing a dark cloak was leaning against the desk.

He looked at each of the students. "I am Anakin Skywalker. I'll be the Ethics instructor for the remainder of the semester. Darth Vader is gone."

He rustled through some papers. "I understand he had put you into pairs to learn to exploit each other." His eyes narrowed. "I don't work that way. Instead, please tell me what you learned about your partner--if anything--and how you would overcome individual weaknesses in order to become a more cohesive team."

He pointed at a student at random. "We will begin with you."

Silly Anakin actually thought that there might not be any questions about the change in teachers.

Valentine cringed slightly. This wasn't what he had anticipated at all. Maybe if he just muddled up his words a bit...
"My partner was eager to please and something of a pacifist, I think." He drummed his fingers on the top of his desk anxiously. "Very handy when you want to learn something obscure, not so handy when it comes to being politically correct when referring to lion-taming tools when being used on an imaginary lion." More finger drumming- he'd love at this point to be able to tell what sort of expression the new teacher was wearing. "He's got all the patience in the world, but I think we'd have to work on a more user-friendly vocabulary so that calling a skipping rope a whip would no longer result in friendly reinforcement babble."
Yeah, he was sweating.

Anakin put out his hands in a soothing motion and kept his face as still as possible. "Relax," he said quietly. "I'm not going to tell Blair what you thought. Being so afraid to offend that you cannot act is a serious flaw that a partner should have noticed. You've done well."

Irulan thought of her partner, "He was very unassuming, tall and unlike the people of my world, very open."

"You found that openness surprising?" Anakin asked. "Was it something you could compensate for if the partnership would have lasted more long-term?"

"I find most people's openness surprising," Irulan said, "In time, I suppose."

Marco considered Zuko. "My partner was a self-centered jerk with the manners of an ox and the computer skills of an ant. He also had an issue smiling."

"How would you try to soften such mannerisms?" Anakin asked. "To get your partner to take himself less seriously?"

"My partner wanted to learn, was eager and excelled at playing the Wii," John said. "Perhaps, someday, she'll be a Wii master, like me."

Anakin's lips quirked up. "What's a Wii?"

"Video game system," John answered. "One of the newer ones. Almost kinda not quite virtual reality."

"She was actually pretty good at the whole motivation thing," Dean said. "Cheerleading wasn't as bad as I thought. Though the uniform still isn't something I'm all that comfortable with."

Anakin gave Dean a very small smile. "Sometimes we have to wear outfits we're not comfortable with," he said. "Would that be a deal-breaker for you in the future?"

"Depends," Dean said slowly. "If it's just part of the thing, then maybe not. If it's a deliberate attempt to make me look stupid... well, I make myself look stupid enough on my own without adding silly outfits into the mix."

Anakin eyes went very cold. "Being more specific would be helpful, Mr. Schrodinger."

What the heck kind of excersize was this? Turtle wanted to go back to the exploiting. She was good at exploiting.

"I learned that John is really awesome and really good at video games and this girlfriend may or may not be really scary."

And that he's a complete tool, really, but Turtle didn't say that outloud.

"...and?" Anakin prompted. "Don't hold back," he said. "I'm looking for an honest analysis, not someone trying to kiss up by telling me what they think I want to hear."

"Valentine was nice." Blair shrugged. "A little demanding at times. It took forever for me to put those tiny umbrellas in the popcorn chicken."

Anakin blinked. "You did what for the huh?"

Very eloquent, that Anakin.

Sam thought about Irulan. "She was very polite, and kind of formal. But we'd never really talked before the last class, so I think that's understandable."

Anakin nodded. "It's hard to find your footing with a stranger," he said. "It took months for Obi-Wan and I to find a rhythm. Do you think you would have eventually complimented each other?"

Molly eyed Dean as she thought about what she wanted to say about him. "I think he has a little too much pride sometimes," she said. "Once we got past that," and once I quit teasing him, "he worked really hard to learn what I wanted to teach him."

"Pride is a difficult thing to work around," Anakin said.

And he should know. "It's important to give him a sense of accomplishment while still providing guidelines." He sighed. "Without making him resent you. Any thoughts?"
