Ethics [Thursday, November 16, 6th period]

Vader stalked into the classroom precisely on time--he was anal-retentive that way--and slammed the door shut.

"Today we begin with a discussion of the Seven Deadly Sins," he growled, holding up a hand and counting the first three off, "beginning with pride, gluttony, and envy. Why do you think these would be considered so deadly? Do you think of yourself being particularly attracted to any of these...vices?" He crossed his arms over his chest and looked around the classroom. "Discuss."

"I think you suffer from excessive pride," Vader replied a bit snottily. "You are entirely too pleased with yourself for discovering that I don't eat and think that bringing me food will somehow upset me."

"I'm not attracted to any of those," Aeryn says, and that's actually kind of a big lie, but she's not wanting to discuss her weaknesses in class, either.

"Nope, can't say any of those really grab my attention." Okay, maybe he was shading the truth slightly on the pride thing. "What's so bad about them, anyway?"

"It is part of this world's concept of failings that will keep you from a happy afterlife of some sort," Vader said, tone making it obvious how stupid he thought that idea was. "The seven include the basic character flaws of most sentient beings: lust, greed, envy, pride, gluttony, wrath, and laziness." Vader shrugged. "I rather enjoy wrath."

"I think everyone's prone to indulging in more than one sin in their life," Krycek said, shrugging. "It's almost unavoidable."

"I agree, "Vader said. "That is why I have broken this into chunks. Because beings can indulge in wrath and pride--" not that those two had defined his entire life, oh no, "--or lust and gluttony or envy, laziness, and pride--and I'd like to see a discussion of all of the sins, not just the one that is easist to own up to."

"How fascinating," Vader replied dryly. "Is that a vote for gluttony?"

Vader nodded. "Indeed. The idea behind the Seven Deadly Sins is that excessive pride leads to disaster. I don't necessarily agree."

"Hmm. Well if we're talking about which sin is most deadly, I'd have to say out of the three it would be gluttony. Because if you're a glutton then chances are your eating habits are out of control and therefore you would probably have excessive weight gain, high cholesterol and high blood pressure," Jamie replied. "Which of course makes it the most attractive to me. Speaking of which how come you never bring food to class? All the other professors do it."

"I've seen what pride can do," Isabel said, thinking of what she'd honestly remembered of Vilandra's life, not the warped dreams Lonnie had caused. "I'll be avoiding that this time around."

"How do you plan to do that?" Vader asked. "Some things are destined."

"Gluttony. Maybe," Stark said. He'd eaten enough Halloween candy to qualify, at least. He could probably make a good case for envy, but who wanted to go there, really?

"Why maybe?" Vader asked. "Are you so unsure of your failings? They are certainly numerous."

He was cruel helpful like that.

Zero shrugged and said, "I can't deny I've got my pride. 'Specially when it comes to my work, I suppose--I mean, I don't think I suck or anything. But if you don't take pride in your work, then what's the point?"

"True," Vader said. "I do not agree with these sins being so very deadly, after all. But some might say that excessive pride would blind someone to certain faults. Or make them overly concerned with saving face. Would you agree?"

Sam would have answered that she was most attracted to pride, but she'd gotten a brainstorm and was busy sketching out a new and improved version of the hand controls on the swoop bike to account for her all too human reflexes.
