Ethics [Thursday, November 16, 6th period]

Vader stalked into the classroom precisely on time--he was anal-retentive that way--and slammed the door shut.

"Today we begin with a discussion of the Seven Deadly Sins," he growled, holding up a hand and counting the first three off, "beginning with pride, gluttony, and envy. Why do you think these would be considered so deadly? Do you think of yourself being particularly attracted to any of these...vices?" He crossed his arms over his chest and looked around the classroom. "Discuss."

"No one cares about your metabolism," Vader replied.

"Then why did you ask a question that leads to talking about it? I bet no one's really interested in my writing, either, but if I talked about pride, that's where my attention would shift," Rory said.

"Keep the discussion metaphorical," Vader growled. "I don't want to hear about metabolism or high blood pressure or cholesterol ratings or the best recipe for strawberry pie. Gluttony extends to other areas. It's the need to have more of something than you should, an addiction of any kind."

"I don't really have a problem with that," Rory decided. "Just with coffee and food."

Vader's thoughts flicked briefly to the huge stacks of books Rory used to have in her room. "Reading could be an addiction," he said somewhat bizarrely. "The overwhelming need to prove yourself to people who won't properly appreciate it, to try to do more and more and more--that could be considered gluttony."

But probably not. Vader was a bit distracted today.

"Um," said Rory, staring at him. "I don't think it is. Reading, maybe, but there are worse vices. And wanting to prove myself isn't a sin."

"It can certainly become one," Vader said, not speaking from experience at all. Really.

He leaned in closer and dropped his voice so that only Rory could hear him. "And don't think I don't know about the envy eating away at you. Skywalker chose someone else. He probably loved her more." He whirled away, not bothering to watch for her reaction.

Deception was at the heart of being a Sith, but Vader could occasionally still sicken himself.

This was one of those moments.
