Dean shrugged and sat on the edge of Sam's desk. "Never said there was. I mean it's not a lifestyle choice I would choose, but..."

Sam rolled his eyes. "Of course not. You're too cool for that," he teased. "But Dawn seems to be especially fond of geekiness, so..."

"So that's still going well?" Dean asked with a grin.

"I think so. I still don't know exactly how to classify what's going on between us, but whatever it is, it's good."

"Generally the accepted term is 'dating,'" Dean said, then narrowed his eyes at his brother. "Don't tell me. You haven't actually asked her out on an official date have you?"

"Well...no? I mean, there hasn't been much of a chance to. And it's not like we don't see each other every day anyway," Sam said defensively.

Dean resisted the urge to facepalm. "Yeah, but you've seen each other every day practically since we got here. If you're going to go out with a girl, you actually have to, y'know, ask her out. Otherwise you end up in situations where you don't know what to call whatever it is you are doing." And yeah, Dean was perfectly aware that some of what he was saying applied equally to him and Alec, but that was completely different. Really. "You need to ask her out. Homecoming's coming up, you couldn't ask for a more perfect opportunity."

Sam looked a little pale at the mention of Homecoming. "I've thought about asking her to Homecoming. A lot. I mean, girls like dances, right? So Dawn probably wants to go?"

Dean gave him a look. "Did Dad drop you on your head as a baby when I wasn't looking? Dude, it's homecoming. Of course she wants to go. And even if she didn't, I can practically guarantee she still wants you to ask her."

"Are you sure?" Sam asked uncertainly. "Because Homecoming means getting dressed up, and dancing, which might not be the wisest thing as far as I'm concerned."

"You don't clean up so bad," Dean told him. "But more to the point, Homecoming means Dawn dressed up. With you getting to look at her all evening."

"I did think about that," Sam admitted, smiling warmly as his mind went to his previous thoughts. "I know she'd look fantastic."

"Well then." Dean spread his hands. "You know what you've got to do."

Knowing what to do didn't wipe the look of worry off of Sam's face. "Yeah, I guess I do. Any tips for how to ask without making a fool of myself?"

"You could try something like 'Hey, wanna go to Homecoming with me?'" Dean told him. "It's not rocket science, Sammy."

"Maybe not for you," he grumbled, glancing at Dean as something occurred to him. "Hey, are you going to go to Homecoming?"

Dean shrugged. "Dunno. Maybe. Depends if I can find someone to go with or if I decide going stag's okay."

Sam couldn't resist snickering to himself. "You don't think Alec wants to go? He could have a dress all picked out, just waiting for you to ask him."

"Dude, I never want to see Alec in a dress because then I'd know what I would look like in a dress. I'm happy to stay in ignorance on that point."

"That's a good point. I think I want to stay ignorant in that respect as well," Sam replied. "So, he'll be okay if you go with someone else?"

Dean nodded. "Alec and me, we've got an... understanding."

"Better than the understanding he had with Jaye, I hope?"

"I'm not Jaye," Dean pointed out the obvious. "I know what I'm getting into and I know what Alec's capable of. I'm not suddenly going to go insane and freak out because Alec acts like Alec."

"Well, that's reassuring, because you're best at your current level of insanity. You get any crazier and we might have a real problem," he teased. "But seriously, I am glad you guys have figured stuff out. You're ahead of me, at least."

Dean grinned. "I'm older. Experience counts for something."
