Library [09/22]

Sam was feeling only a little nervous as he headed over to open the library for the first time. Luckily, being surrounded by books did a lot to help him relax.

"I knew that," he said, in a way that would probably be obvious that he didn't. "Homecoming was still a while away at that point and I didn't know what other reason to give her."

"Dinner at a nice restaurant?" Dean suggested.

"...yeah, that probably would have worked, wouldn't it?" Sam sighed.

Dean reached over and patted Sam's shoulder. "Don't worry. You'll get the hang of it."

There were times where Sam would shrug off Dean's hand, but he appreciated the gesture a lot right now. "Maybe. Hopefully it'll be sooner, rather than later."

"You've always been a quick study," Dean said with a half shrug. "I'm sure that'll hold true here too."

"I'm a quick study in things that make sense, like Latin and tactics and legends. Girls are an entirely separate story," Sam pointed out.

"They're not an entirely different species though," Dean pointed out. "Well, not most of them anyway. You're making it more difficult than it needs to be, I think."

"I'm not trying to," Sam said defensively. "And I'm not interested in learning absolutely everything about girls. I really just want to understand Dawn."

"Well good, because I'm not sure that even girls know absolutely everythign about girls."

"See, that right there is just part of the problem," Sam said, laughing lightly. "When other girls can't even understand you..."

"Well it's not like you know absolutely everything about too many guys either," Dean pointed out. "Like, I know absolutely everythign about myself. And I would've said I knew absolutely everything about you when you were 11. Now I just know about 90% of everything about you."

"Yeah, but there are some special circumstances there," he pointed out. "I mean, if you'd been around the whole time, you'd know 100% of everything about me too."

"Probably," Dean agreed easily. "But you're missing my point. You're literally the only person I can say that about and I've known you since the day you were born. So you don't know everything about Dawn. I'd be worried if you thought you did."

Sam shrugged, and nodded. "I guess you're right. I'd just like to know more than I already do."

"That'll come." Dean grinned. "They say the best way to learn about someone is to live with them and hey, you're doing that so..."

"Good point," he replied. "I bet I know more about Dawn than I would if I wasn't living with her." Sam sighed. "I just don't want to screw this up. And I know I probably don't say this often enough, but I am grateful for your help."

"That's what big brothers are for," Dean said, patting Sam's shoulder again. "And I suppose since I'm here, I should actually look at some books. Where's the mystery section, geekboy?"

Sam smirked, and pointed over towards the fiction section. "It's over there. Be careful - they're by the romance novels."

"Dude, I think I can tell the difference between a mystery and a romance novel," Dean said with great dignity. "Though in your quest to think like a girl, maybe you should read some of them."

"I'm pretty sure that won't be necessary," Sam said, laughing. "I want to think like a girl, not act like one."

Dean opened his mouth then closed it and shook his head. "Nah. Too easy."

Sam laughed and reached over to hit Dean on the arm. "Jerk. Go find a book."
