Library [09/22]

Sam was feeling only a little nervous as he headed over to open the library for the first time. Luckily, being surrounded by books did a lot to help him relax.

"Dude, I never want to see Alec in a dress because then I'd know what I would look like in a dress. I'm happy to stay in ignorance on that point."

"That's a good point. I think I want to stay ignorant in that respect as well," Sam replied. "So, he'll be okay if you go with someone else?"

Dean nodded. "Alec and me, we've got an... understanding."

"Better than the understanding he had with Jaye, I hope?"

"I'm not Jaye," Dean pointed out the obvious. "I know what I'm getting into and I know what Alec's capable of. I'm not suddenly going to go insane and freak out because Alec acts like Alec."

"Well, that's reassuring, because you're best at your current level of insanity. You get any crazier and we might have a real problem," he teased. "But seriously, I am glad you guys have figured stuff out. You're ahead of me, at least."

Dean grinned. "I'm older. Experience counts for something."

"Is there ever going to be a situation where you being older won't be a suitable answer for everything?" Sam asked, rolling his eyes.

"Not as long as I am older," Dean shot back with a smirk.

"You're lucky that wasn't a four year portal," he teased half-heartedly.

"Wouldn't matter if you did lap me in age," Dean said with a shrug. "I'd still be your big brother."

"Yeah, I guess you would be," Sam admitted. "It's too bad that 'I'm younger than you are' doesn't work to end arguments the same way."

Dean shrugged again. "No one said life was fair."

"Life is fair for older brothers, but not younger ones, right?"

"Nah. We got to fall the older brother rules of conduct," Dean said deadpan.

"Do I even want to know what those are? Or am I not allowed to know because I'm not an older brother?" he asked, laughing.

"It's not that complicated. Look after your little brother. Make sure he's safe and happy. No matter what it takes." He smiled a little. "How am I doing?"

Sam couldn't help but grin. "You're doing really well. The other older brothers would be very proud of you."

Dean met Sam's eyes and smiled for a long moment and then in an effort to keep the moment from getting too heavy added, "And you still need to get your hair cut," Dean

Sam laughed and rolled his eyes. "I know. I promise, if nothing else, I'll let you do it before Homecoming if Dawn says yes."

"She'll say yes," Dean said confidently.

"I hope so. She said she had a pretty dress, and she was upset that she hadn't had a reason to wear it yet..." Sam trailed off, letting himself get a nice mental image of Dawn.

Dean mentally facepalmed again. "Okay, Sammy? For future info? When a girl says something like that, it's a hint that she wants you to give her a reason."

"I knew that," he said, in a way that would probably be obvious that he didn't. "Homecoming was still a while away at that point and I didn't know what other reason to give her."

"Dinner at a nice restaurant?" Dean suggested.
