Internet for Dummies, Wednesday 9/6, 3rd Period

Abby settled on the front desk in the computer lab and smiled at the class. "Welcome to Internet for Dummies. Which is not an insult or anything, just my attempt at being funny."

She looked out over the class. "This would be the part where you all agree and laugh along with me."

"Today we're going to take it slow. Especially considering that not everyone here knows how to use computers. So we're going to team up and do reports on what the internet is all about." Abby read off the groups lists and waited for everyone to move around.

"I want you guys to talk about what you already know about the internet. What it does, how it helps you and what you want to learn from it." Abby passed out handouts. "If you don't know about the internet, then you can use this handy piece of paper as a cheat sheet."

Having heard Ray introduce himself, Door walks over with her brand new mostly-mystifying laptop and sits down, giving him the wiggling fingers of apparently-wanting-toast because it seems to serve as a decent greeting even if it isn't some sort of local ritual. "Hi - I'm Door."

Ray hasn't been fingerwiggled at yet so he stared and then quirked an eyebrow. "That a greeting where you're from?" And, for some reason, he fingerwiggled back. "Ray."

Door smiles. "No. I rather thought it was here, but it turns out to be just someone's personal thing. Still, it works." She opens up her laptop. "This is all a bit new to me - I've only just about figured out what a file is."

She's not kidding; her desktop's covered with individual txt files, since she hasn't actually progressed to understanding folders.

Ray looked over. "That's a lot of files. What's all on those?"

Door looks a bit sheepish. "A couple are my schedule of classes and such, but most of them are just me practicing typing and saving things. I've figured out how to make them but not quite how to get rid of them."

"Oh." He nodded towards the screen. "Want me to show you?"

Door nods. "Please!"

"Okay." He pointed to a small icon on the screen. "That's the trash can. Whenever you don't want anything anymore, move it to the trash can and get rid of it. Like this..."

He took a hold of the mouse or the trackpad and showed her how to move the file from it's spot on the desktop to the trash can.

"It's just like if you've got a rotted banana that you don't want. Pick it up and toss it."

"As opposed to a rotted banana that I do want?" Door grins and drags one of the practice files over to the picture of the trash can.

"Unless you're gonna use that rotted banana to throw at people, I don't wanna know about it," he said and nodded. "You got it. See, easy like pie."
notajar: (talky)

"Pie's not easy. Tea's easy. Pie burns." She nods like a girl who speaks from the experience of not being able to cook anything that isn't boiled or roasted over a campfire. "Thank you."

Re: Group B

"But pie is good," Ray argued without heat. "Tea's...a liquid."

"Oh, I like pie," Door assures him. "It's just not easy."

Re: Group B

[identity profile] the-right-ray.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Easy as in cooking it?" Ray asked. "If so, yeah, I agree. That's why you buy those pre-made ones in the freezer. All you gotta do is thaw it and have a fork ready."
notajar: (excited)

Re: Group B

[personal profile] notajar 2006-09-06 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've bought hot ones in the market, but we didn't have a freezer. No electricity," Door explains. Her eyes widen. "The common rooms here have them, though. I wonder if I could buy pie in town."

No, she hasn't actually bought any new clothes yet, or even been into town aside from the clinic. But seriously, priorities. Pie!

[identity profile] the-right-ray.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's pie in town," he nodded. "There's a whole shop of 'rot your teeth out goodness' that you can go to," Ray said. "Where're you from that there's no electricity?"
notajar: (explaining)

"Under London. Sort of - our house is a little odd." Door waves a hand slightly. "Sometimes there's electricity depending where you are. You can't count on it, though; we mostly use gas. And wood; wood always burns."

Re: Group B

[identity profile] the-right-ray.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Under London?" Ray repeated, confused. "I'm guessing that's not like a North Dakota kinda description."
notajar: (explaining)

Re: Group B

[personal profile] notajar 2006-09-06 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Door puts one hand in the air, parallel with the floor, then waves the other beneath it. "Under London."

Re: Group B

[identity profile] the-right-ray.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Huh." Ray took a minute to think about that. "Must've been tough."
notajar: (considering)

Re: Group B

[personal profile] notajar 2006-09-06 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Door considers this. "Not really? I expect it would be if you're used to having things like that, but to me it's just home."

Re: Group B

[identity profile] the-right-ray.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Why couldn't you live in Above London?"
notajar: (hmm)

Re: Group B

[personal profile] notajar 2006-09-06 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"London Above, we call it," Door says. "If you're from Below, people Above don't notice you. It's not just like moving to a new house or something. You can't get a job or a bank account or a telephone." She shrugs. "Some try, but mostly they end up on the streets; not a life I'd choose."

Re: Group B

[identity profile] the-right-ray.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ray frowned and shook his head. "How're you adjusting now?"
notajar: (ya rly!)

[personal profile] notajar 2006-09-06 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"You mean to the part where so far everybody I've walked up to has actually seen me standing there?" Door taps the computer. "And things like this actually work for me? It's... new, that's for sure."
