Internet for Dummies, Wednesday 9/6, 3rd Period

Abby settled on the front desk in the computer lab and smiled at the class. "Welcome to Internet for Dummies. Which is not an insult or anything, just my attempt at being funny."

She looked out over the class. "This would be the part where you all agree and laugh along with me."

"Today we're going to take it slow. Especially considering that not everyone here knows how to use computers. So we're going to team up and do reports on what the internet is all about." Abby read off the groups lists and waited for everyone to move around.

"I want you guys to talk about what you already know about the internet. What it does, how it helps you and what you want to learn from it." Abby passed out handouts. "If you don't know about the internet, then you can use this handy piece of paper as a cheat sheet."

Door puts one hand in the air, parallel with the floor, then waves the other beneath it. "Under London."

"Huh." Ray took a minute to think about that. "Must've been tough."

Door considers this. "Not really? I expect it would be if you're used to having things like that, but to me it's just home."

"Why couldn't you live in Above London?"
notajar: (hmm)

"London Above, we call it," Door says. "If you're from Below, people Above don't notice you. It's not just like moving to a new house or something. You can't get a job or a bank account or a telephone." She shrugs. "Some try, but mostly they end up on the streets; not a life I'd choose."

Ray frowned and shook his head. "How're you adjusting now?"

"You mean to the part where so far everybody I've walked up to has actually seen me standing there?" Door taps the computer. "And things like this actually work for me? It's... new, that's for sure."

"You'll get used to it and soon you'll be a pro." He pulled out his own computer and pulled up a search engine. "Here's where I'm from."

And through the magic of the internet, he was able to show her a picture of Chicago.

Door stares at the screen. "My father would lo-- would've loved this. He collected maps and pictures of other places, all sorts of books. To have it all at his fingertips like this..." She reads the legend under the picture. "I know where that is, sort of. Somewhere in the centre of America, right?"

"Uh huh," he said and nodded. "Not too far away if you like long road trips. Lots going on there. Busy city."

Evie slid into her seat across from Door and Ray, and then beamed at her when she recognized Door. "Oh, you're all right! I'm so glad."

Door blinks, then catches on, as it's been a day or so since she's run across someone who was there when she arrived. "You were in my rescue party?" She smiles.

"Well, not so much a rescuer, on my part. More one of the crowd standing there gasping. Hermione and Rory and Seely were all very very competent, though," Evie assures her. "I'm Evie, though you probably heard me say that. I've been wondering how you were all weekend."

"Much better, thanks. I heal rather quickly." In fact by now, not only is the bandage gone from her arm, there's not really much sign of a wound. "I've met Hermione, and Seely is my roommate; I've not met Rory, though. I'll have to thank her when I do."

"She's very nice. And speaks *ever* so many languages." Evie glanced at Door's arm, and looked surprised. "Goodness. It really wasn't all that serious, then, was it?" She paused. "Hermione's quite nice, and Seely seemed like a gentleman, the one time I met him. But... are you quite comfortable sharing a room with him?" Evie suddenly blushed. "It might be rather... distracting."

"For him or for me?" Door grins. "I've been a perfect gentlewoman so far."
