Internet for Dummies, Wednesday 9/6, 3rd Period

Abby settled on the front desk in the computer lab and smiled at the class. "Welcome to Internet for Dummies. Which is not an insult or anything, just my attempt at being funny."

She looked out over the class. "This would be the part where you all agree and laugh along with me."

"Today we're going to take it slow. Especially considering that not everyone here knows how to use computers. So we're going to team up and do reports on what the internet is all about." Abby read off the groups lists and waited for everyone to move around.

"I want you guys to talk about what you already know about the internet. What it does, how it helps you and what you want to learn from it." Abby passed out handouts. "If you don't know about the internet, then you can use this handy piece of paper as a cheat sheet."

Having heard Ray introduce himself, Door walks over with her brand new mostly-mystifying laptop and sits down, giving him the wiggling fingers of apparently-wanting-toast because it seems to serve as a decent greeting even if it isn't some sort of local ritual. "Hi - I'm Door."

Ray hasn't been fingerwiggled at yet so he stared and then quirked an eyebrow. "That a greeting where you're from?" And, for some reason, he fingerwiggled back. "Ray."

Door smiles. "No. I rather thought it was here, but it turns out to be just someone's personal thing. Still, it works." She opens up her laptop. "This is all a bit new to me - I've only just about figured out what a file is."

She's not kidding; her desktop's covered with individual txt files, since she hasn't actually progressed to understanding folders.

Ray looked over. "That's a lot of files. What's all on those?"

Door looks a bit sheepish. "A couple are my schedule of classes and such, but most of them are just me practicing typing and saving things. I've figured out how to make them but not quite how to get rid of them."

"Oh." He nodded towards the screen. "Want me to show you?"

Door nods. "Please!"

"Okay." He pointed to a small icon on the screen. "That's the trash can. Whenever you don't want anything anymore, move it to the trash can and get rid of it. Like this..."

He took a hold of the mouse or the trackpad and showed her how to move the file from it's spot on the desktop to the trash can.

"It's just like if you've got a rotted banana that you don't want. Pick it up and toss it."

"As opposed to a rotted banana that I do want?" Door grins and drags one of the practice files over to the picture of the trash can.

"Unless you're gonna use that rotted banana to throw at people, I don't wanna know about it," he said and nodded. "You got it. See, easy like pie."

"Pie's not easy. Tea's easy. Pie burns." She nods like a girl who speaks from the experience of not being able to cook anything that isn't boiled or roasted over a campfire. "Thank you."

"But pie is good," Ray argued without heat. "Tea's...a liquid."

Mac is hovering quietly in the background. In a very 'innocent and not stalkerish at all' way. Anyway, she's there.

Evie rushed over and took her seat, looking very abashed. "I am *so* sorry, I got rather distracted-- Ooo. Can we look for the Library at Alexandria?"

"Alexandria, Virginia?" Ray asked, quirking an eyebrow.

"Alexandria, Egypt," Evie said, very helpfully. "The one in Virginia must be named after it. It was destroyed sometime by Aurelian in the 3rd Century. They found a site for in just two years ago!" She bounced in her chair, then added, "Or perhaps something about new films?"

"Ummm..." Evie fidgeted, blushing a bit. "Sort of?"

"Want me to get the manual out for you?" Ray asked. "It doesn't have pictures or witty stuff like that."

Evie gave him a disgruntled look. "No. I can do it. By myself. Thank you."

Ray grinned at her. "Okay. Don't let me stop you. I'll sit back and bask in your technological goodness."

"Fine. I will." Evie gave him a determined little nod, then carefully used the mouse to take her to Google, then typed in "Library of Alexandria."

"There, see?" Unfortunately, Evie clicked on one of the sidebars about other kinds of libraries, and--

"Ack ack ack ohmigod what is that ack ack ack--"

Ray, whose attention had slipped away immediately, looked back towards her screen and immediately started laughing.

"Interesting choice of libraries there."

"Make it go away!" Evie flailed, stabbing at the keyboard, then the mouse, accidentally killing one image (yay) and enlarging another (woe). "Eeeep!
