Library [09/05]

Rory came in early - much earlier than she usually cared to be up, but it's not as though she had been sleeping well anyway - and opened up the library.

She took her place behind the desk with her cup of coffee and several cupcakes. She wasn't sure why she had cupcakes ~~aside from it being FH's first birthday~~ other than her usual desire to be whimsical. In any case, she had napkins and antibacterial lotion, so the books would stay safe even though she was eating nowhere near them.

And now she was dusting shelves off in the stacks, though she could be called to help anyone who needed it.

Thursday entered the library and began to wander around to get a feel for the place. After The Great Library, all others paled in comparison, but the set-up wasn't bad at all for a school, especially one that didn't have quite the same historical affinity for literature as her own universe.

She noticed that there was no one at the counter and decided to call out. "Hello?"

Rory stuck her head around the shelf she was browsing. "Oh! Hi! Sorry," she said, bustling over. "Can I help you?"

"I'm Thursday Next, the new literature teacher. I wanted to make sure that my students would be able to get copies of the texts I've chosen for this semester."

"Oh!" Rory lit up like the Las Vegas strip. "I'm Rory Gilmore, hi. I'm in your class! And I'm sure we probably have everything. It's a very comprehensive library."

"Pleased to meet you." Thursday offered a copy of the syllabus. "I'm still unsure of the differences between my timeline and this one, so I thought it best to check."

Rory bit her lip and took a look at the syllabus. "We have all of these," she said, nodding and smiling. "A whole section on Demesnes, actually, though I'll admit I don't know those as well as I know the others."

"I don't either, but I thought it only fair to include something on romance novels, even if only to compare to good writing."

Rory laughed. "I have a couple friends who are big fans, but I'm more into the work of actual writers, yeah."

Thursday was glad to hear it and she nodded. "How long have you been working in the library?" She glanced around.

"Since January," Rory said, thinking about it. "Last semester and all of this past summer. Are you from England? I'm really bad at guessing accents."

"Swindon," Thursday nodded. "I lived and worked in London for a few years. I take it, from working here, that you enjoy reading?"

After an hour, the former president was feeling a bit overwhelmed. On the table beside her mostly-empty coffee cup were two impressive stacks of books, including The Republic by Plato; The Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes; The Social Contract by Rousseau; The Prince by Machiavelli; The Second Treatise by John Locke; as well as a bound copy of the American Declaration of Independence. All of this without even touching on the alien systems she wanted to highlight. With a sigh, she settled in to take notes, realizing this was going to take more than she thought.

Wilson had tea. This made him happy. He also had some research to do for his oncology paper and so had decided to check out the periodical section of the library. Thus he slipped in quietly a few hours before he'd be teaching to get some work done.

Setting his soft sided briefcase up on an empty table near the periodical section, he pulled out the laptop and then began to dive in and out of the stacks and around the microfiche to look up what he needed.

Angela stopped by between getting her computer from Ms. Sciuto and heading th acting class. "Hey, Rory."

Rory waved. "Have you had any classes yet?"

"Cross-Species Communication," Angela nodded. "And acting's next period. What about you?"

She reached out and took a cupcake.

"I have Lit in a few hours," Rory replied. "Otherwise it's a pretty easy day for me. But I had Interstellar Relations and Comm Studies yesterday."

"How were those?," Angela asked, licking off the frosting. "I worry my schedule will seem all empty this semester with so few classes. Especially since they only meet once a week."

"Same here, with the worrying. They were both okay. Mr. Cale is very, very good-looking," Rory said.

"Oh?," Angela asked. "What does he look like?"

"Cute," Rory said. "And young. And he has glasses."

"Like the paleoontology teacher last year?," Angela asked, brightening. "Nice."

"I wonder where Dr. Oliver went," Rory wondered sadly. "He was cute, too, with his smart glasses."

"Maybe special colllections ate him," Angela suggested. "Hope not, though. Oh, hey, did you meet the new librarian yesterday? She seems nice."
