Library [09/05]

Rory came in early - much earlier than she usually cared to be up, but it's not as though she had been sleeping well anyway - and opened up the library.

She took her place behind the desk with her cup of coffee and several cupcakes. She wasn't sure why she had cupcakes aside from it being FH's first birthday other than her usual desire to be whimsical. In any case, she had napkins and antibacterial lotion, so the books would stay safe even though she was eating nowhere near them.

"Swindon," Thursday nodded. "I lived and worked in London for a few years. I take it, from working here, that you enjoy reading?"

"Me too," Thursday said. "I doubt you'll have problems with the reading list then. My father told me that things were different here and that literature isn't as popular as it is in our timeline, so I chose some hopefully well-known books."

"1989. Just a different 1989. In my timeline, literature is immensely popular. I suppose you could call it our popular culture. There's also quite a booming crime industry with forgeries. I used to work for SpecOps-27, the literary detectives. We had more than enough work to keep us busy."

"Yes. From what I've seen here, television, films and music are dominant, but that's not the case where I come from. Everyone thrives on literature, whether it be prose, poetry or plays. One of the longest running arguments is who wrote Shakespeare's plays. Literary detectives are part of SpecOps. We monitor and police all literature-related crimes, whether it's someone importing low quality copies of Jane Austen's Collected Works or someone stealing an original manuscript. It's not as glamorous as it might sound, but it pays the bills."

"I suppose that SpecOps likes to have the right people for the right job at their disposal."
