Study Hall - Monday, September 19th

Welcome to the study hall for Monday.

I spent yesterday in my tower room with a bottle of Captain Morgan and a carton of cigarettes and I haven't held a gun in twenty-four hours. Needless to say, I am not in the best of fuckin' moods, and the first student to try anything is getting detention. Hell, the first teacher to try anything with me may get detention.

*glares at students across the study hall teacher's desk, props her booted feet on the corner of the desk, and flashes a dirty look to everybody who walks past*

Your announcements for today:

-- As some of you who didn't already know may have found out this weekend, we do have werewolves on campus. The curfew is there for a reason, people. And on the nights of the full moon, you WILL be in your dorm rooms by the time the moon rises. No exceptions.

-- For anyone who may have missed it, homecoming's coming up soon. Also, [livejournal.com profile] fandomhitunes has arrived.

-- The door of locker 327 is stuck open and won't fucking shut. There's your warning.

-- The cafeteria will be serving any meal you ask for today on request, but please keep in mind that the cafeteria workers think someone poured a potion or something into one of the vats, and since they were pretty sure it wasn't hazardous, they went and started serving anyway. I really have to fire those fucking bastards sooner or later.

Jesus, I need a gun. *squirms*

Maybe if I just hold a water pistol, it'll take the edge off ...

I have a job, at the candy store downtown. It starts today.

He debates adding how he doesn't expect to be terribly social, given . . . things. Later. After they've actually spoken a few times, maybe.

Do you? Joined one of the clubs, maybe?

This time the note dances across the table, looking a bit like a ballet-dancing mushroom from a Disney movie.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory reads the note, and is slightly disappointed.

Aw. Congrats on the new job. I'm the editor-in-chief of the yearbook, and I was going to invite you to our meeting tonight - we're a teeny bit understaffed, and you seem really organized and perfect for it. But if you have work, I totally understand.

She pauses, and then adds, And if you keep it up with those cool note-maneuvers, I'm going to feel like a deficient...what's the word...Muggle.

She tosses the note over her shoulder, hoping it didn't hit Remus or anyone else.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm not working I'd love to come. I don't know what I could contribute, though.

He smirks a little at the last bit. Muggles are fascinating. We wizards use a lot of shortcuts in comparison.

And I like to show off.

The note cartwheels back to her.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome. The meeting's at Luke's Diner around sevenish, but I'll be there until late - Luke's my stepdad. And if you can make it, I'll treat you to dinner.

Rory draws a little cartoon figure of herself juggling a pile of books, a cheeseburger, and a cup of coffee. A note next to it reads: My magic powers: I read lightning fast, eat fast food without gaining a pound, and have the caffeine tolerance of an elephant.

She folds the note into a football and flicks it to Remus.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are very impressive magic powers.

He draws himself, wand drawn, making books fly around, dishes wash, socks fold and a quill write on a scroll.

These are the most useful things I can do. Within the confines of school, at least. There's lots still to learn--I'm a little worried about getting behind, really.

What's a diner?

The note, folded like a little square paper man, waltzes back across the table.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory's fingers waltz with the little man, until she decides to open it up. She replies:

See, I'm lazy, so those all sound pretty good. And you shouldn't worry about getting behind - don't they have magic classes here?

A diner is a place where one goes to eat. It's more relaxed than a restaurant, and this one specializes in things like hamburgers and pancakes. Luke's is located directly across from your house, I think.

She leans across Logan and barely tosses the note, so that it lands right behind Remus's chair.

[ooc: That location is according to Lilly Kane. I have no idea if it's anywhere near accurate.]

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
A lazy flick of the wand and it flies up onto the table again.

There are, but they're not as specialized as at Hogwarts. That's my old school. (Technically I'm not supposed to do magic outside of school grounds while I'm a student, but no one's fussed over it yet. I don't know if the States has a wizarding council the way we do in the UK. I assume you have wizards here but I've never met any.)

I've noticed the diner but I didn't know you could eat there. There's a hammer on the sign.

[ooc: sounds good to me--the geography of the town seems pretty fluid, really.]

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory writes back, drops it on the floor, and kicks it back to Remus.

That's understandable. What does one do after high school in the wizarding world? Like, do you have a university? And what kind of professions can you go into?

And yeah...Luke's kind of weird with that sign. My mom and I keep telling him to change it, but it's a sort of pick-your-battles situation. The food's good, though. I'm pretty sure it's how he got my mom to marry him.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He brings the note swirling up to the table top, smiling as his fingers move.

There's not really universities as such: you take your OWLs in your fifth year and your NEWTs in your seventh, and how you score in those determines what kind of professions you can go into. There's charm breakers and bankers and aurors--they kind of fight evil creatures--and researchers and people who look after magical creatures, and then perfectly ordinary professions like running inns or wand shops. And some of the old families don't work at all because they don't need to.

I look forward to trying pancakes. Are they fried in a pan like eggs?

The note slithers back like a lazy snake.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory grins at the snake before opening it.

Oh, that's like Muggle secondary school, I think. I was raised in the States, so I can't quite relate, but I think they have something really similar to that with their O-levels. But that's so cool about all the occupations. I mean, I'm sure Muggle culture seems foreign to you, but we're a lot more mundane, from what I can tell...though some of those things sound similar to our world.

So what do you want to be when you graduate? I'm going guess...researcher of some sort. Am I right?

Pancakes are indeed fried in a pan. They are wonderful. You eat them with syrup, and it's the best EVER. There's also French toast, which is like that except it's actually bread.

Rory actually stands up, walks over, and presents the note with a bow. She sets it on the table and skips back to her seat.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, exactly: my old headmaster thinks I have a future as an auror, but

He pauses for a long time.

Finally he writes, there are some family circumstances in the way. I'm not sure what's going to happen once I'm done with school. Research would be very good, or perhaps back to Hogwarts to teach. It'll depend on a lot of things.

What, exactly, about the toast makes it French? I'm imagining a lot of sauce. I've had ordinary British toast many times . . . I can't imagine it's much different. Unless it speaks and says "oui! oui! mangez-moi!" perhaps.

The note skitters back to Rory, ducking around bookbags and people's elbows.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Aurors are like wizard police officers, right? You'd be good at that, I think. But if there's something standing in your way...well...find a way around it!

Well, this way of making toast was created by the French. They call it "pain perdu" for "lost bread" because traditionally, you use stale bread to make it. And the biggest difference is that the bread is sliced very thickly, and you fry it after soaking it in eggs. And also, it's really fun to eat it while speaking in an outrageous French accent and wearing a beret.

Rory flips the note into the air and hits it with her pencil, as though she were playing baseball.

[ooc: Merci beaucoup, high school French classes.]

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Remus, of course, thinks of a Quaffle and a beater's bat.

That sounds tasty for tea. I do miss tea-time.

It's kind of policing, though there's not much to police right now. There's rumors . . . but they're just rumors. Probably means nothing.

I don't know if I can find a way around it. It's kind of there. There's no cure changing the circumstances, and where I come from people tend to be frighteningly intolerant about it. So I don't know. Maybe in the Muggle world they won't mind so much.

This line of thought is making him gloomy, so the note just slides back without any gymnastics.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory watches the note slide, and wonders what happened to Remus's mood.

Aw. I'm sorry if I said something wrong. And I totally understand if it's something you can't change. I didn't mean to be flippant - just trying to keep upbeat, you know?

Were you thinking of taking a job in the Muggle world? Would you be able to use magic then? Because I had no idea there were wizards until I came here. But that might just be me.

She draws a little happy face on the note, and folds it into a butterfly shape. She can't quite send it flapping across the room, but she tries.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory's attempt at making the note fly makes him smile and he flicks his wand again, as unobstrusivly as he can, to make it actually fly and land in front of him.

Not your fault. I just don't like to think about it. I get hopeless and gloomy and carry on like a right twat, and my best friend isn't here to cheer me out of it, so . . . yes. I don't like to dwell.

I think about leaving the Wizarding world for good sometimes, but it would mean leaving a lot of things that are dear to me behind as well. I wouldn't be able to use magic, for one. We try to lay low except in places like this, where anything goes so long as you don't blow up the school or hurt someone.

He refolds it into a butterfly and sends the note flying back, flapping lazy wings.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory smirks at the butterfly.

I can understand that. I mean, I'm not going to pry, but whatever it is, you can talk to me about it sometime if you want. I'm a pretty good listener, from what I hear. (Ha, puns!)

Yeah, this school is crazy. I can't tell you how odd it is to be one of the very, very few people who goes here who doesn't use magic or weaponry and isn't a mutant or alien.

Rory pops the note up into the air and spikes it over like a volleyball.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Remus catches it in one hand.

I may take you up on that sometime.

My old school had ghosts and a poltergeist and house-elves and a forest we were forbidden to go into (called the Forbidden Forest, naturally) because it was too dangerous. The vortex in locker 327? Now that's weird. To so nothing of our gun-toting principal.

But I think I like her, really. If nothing else, she's true to herself. I admire that.

I think there are a lot of non-magical people here, though. My house-mates, for example. A lot of wizards don't like Muggles for whatever reason, but I think that's just silly. Being magical is like having blue eyes or red hair. Some people do and some don't, and it's all okay.

(Though I've heard people with blue eyes see the world differently from the rest of us--is that true? ;)

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha - not that I know of. We with blue ares are just a bit more sensitive to the sun, I think. But since I've had blue eyes my entire life, I could be wrong.

And that locker - eek. I'm supposed to go investigate it with my friend a guy I'm seeing my boyfriend someone at some point. We're taking flamethrowers, since we're both Muggles and there's that whole weapons ban. Plus, we're wearing explorer hats, which to me is the most important part. Accessories make the outfit, you know.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He manfully manages not to sporfle out loud, and writes, expression entirely serious: Yes: many an expedition were ruined by the incorrect shoelaces and wrong color of hats.

I wish you well, brave warrior. Don't singe yourself with the flamethrower.

Now I have to ask a stupid question: I've been wracking my brain and I can't think of what a yearbook is. I mean, it's just an account of the year, isn't it? Or is it another of those Muggle things that sounds obvious but isn't?

The little note dances back to her.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Rory smiles.

Yes, exactly. And our hats will be khaki and have little lights on them and they will be both functional and fashionable!

A yearbook is as you guessed - a book about the school year. It's mostly pictures taken throughout the year, and it includes a portrait of each student and all the staff. It's a lot of work to put together, which is why I'm trying to get people to join...Oh, and at the end of the year, you get your friends to write things in it. It's sort of a souviener of your school days.

Rory decides to go old-school, and folds the paper into an airplane and sends it whizzing...right past Remus's head. "Oops," she murmurs.

[identity profile] imisspadfoot.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Remus turns and commands, "Accio note," in his quietest voice. It flies back to him and he catches it, glancing around in the hopes that no one noticed. He smiles at Rory like 'sorry, habit,' and opens the note.

How very cunning! Functional clothing is the best kind.

The yearbook sounds like fun, really. And I expect the souviener aspect is the main draw--something to help you remember. Very nice.
