Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

Bel settled back and waited to see who else was taking the class.

Lyra nodded to the demon. 'Half-demon,' she thought to herself.

"Hullo, Bel."

Bel nodded back. "Hey," he said. "How's it going?"

"Okay. Glad this class finally started."Lyra sighed. "Normally I'm not this excited, but somehow I think this one's going to prove essential."

"Yeah," Bel said, nodding. "I know the feeling. I mean, I've learned a lot in the year I've been here, and I've picked up some things from when I was above ground doing research, but there's a lot of references that people make to tv and movies and music and stuff that I just don't understand."

"Above ground? Did you used to live in the cellar?" Lyra wasn't being silly, she was really confused.

"I'm from the Underworld," Bel said. "It's where demons live in my dimension. It's underground, pretty much like you expect hell to be."

"Huh." Lyra looked thoughtful. "I've never been to hell, but I did go to the land of the dead once. I wonder if it was the same place."

"Depends," Bel said. "There are a hundred different afterlives out there. Most people don't want to end up in the Underworld when they're dead, though."

"Not a pleasant place, then?" It's a rhetorical question, of course. Growing up in a nearly world-spanning theocracy, she knows all about hell; she wanted to see how honest he was about his past.

"Yeah, pretty much sucked but it was all I knew," Bel said.

Lyra looked slightly taken aback. She'd neve considered the idea that maybe a demon wouldn't have known any other way than, well, evil.

"How'd you manage to be half-demon?" she blurted, to cover her reaction. Then facepalmed as she realized what she'd asked. "Sorry, don't need to answer that. Shouldn't have asked."

Bel gave her a half-smile. "It's okay," he said. "My mother was a demon, my father was a human. I was, uh, raised by my mother's side of the family."

Lyra smiled apologetically. "I, uh, figured. How did you come to be here, then, if I'm not overstepping again?"

"Hey, Little Brother," Bel said. "How're your first few days here going?"

"Hard," Luke answered honestly. "A lot of people knew my father."

"Yeah," Bel said. "He was one of the popular kids I guess. And he taught a class on flight over the summer, so a lot of people knew him that way."

Luke nodded. "I'm beginning to want to change my name," he muttered.

"Do what I do," Bel said with a smirk. "Go by one name."

"Any suggestions?" Luke asked.

"Drop the last name and just go by Luke?" Bel suggested. "Probably too late for that now, though."

Luke nodded. "I'm starting to get 'Anakin's Luke?' questions, now."

"We all got things we gotta live down," Bel said, patting Luke on the back.

"I don't mind," Luke began, "but I don't want it to be my only characteristic."
