Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

Lorelai, of course, has a very large mug of coffee in her hands as her students file in. She smiles at them brightly and waits until they've all taken their seats before beginning to speak.

"Good afternoon!" she greets. "I'm Lorelai Gilmore-Danes. I realize that's a mouthful and I have no problem with any of you calling me Lorelai. If you're not comfortable with that I'll answer to Ms. Gilmore or Ms. Danes, but you definitely don't need to use the whole thing, okay?"

She put her mug down passed out papers to each student. "This is your syllabus. It's more of a guide than it is set in stone, so it may change after we talk today."

After passing out the papers, she sat on the edge of her desk and picked up her mug again. "Now, I'm guessing most of you are from other times and places. I'll best be able to help you if you tell me where and when you're from and what you want to learn from this class."

Lyra smiled apologetically. "I, uh, figured. How did you come to be here, then, if I'm not overstepping again?"

"I was sent here to learn to be human," Bel admitted. "To learn to act like one at least."

She thought about asking if he was sent by his mother's family, and for what reason, but she decided she doesn't really want to know the answer, even if the questions weren't highly invasive.

"What other classes are you taking? To learn to be more human?"

"Ethics," Bel answered. "And criminal justice. I'm also taking Hunting 101, but that's mainly for fun. How about you, what are you taking?"

"Me? Oh, I'm in this class, obviously. And World History, Philosophy of Values and Prophecy." Lyra grinned. "Masochism runs in my fmaily."

"I'll have to take Prophecy next semester if Phale's offering it," Bel said. He shook his head. "An angel teaching a demon, who would've thought?"

Lyra did a double take at Bel. "An angel? He doesn't look like an angel. I mean, he's not, not all glowy and transparent."

"Oh, yeah, Phale's an angel," Bel said. "He even has wings, but you can't see 'em all the time."
