World History in a Nutshell - Week 1 (09/04)

It's entirely possible that Daniel is looking a wee bit jetlagged at the front of the class and is clutching at a cup of coffee like it's a lifeline.

He smiles as the class files in, leaning against his desk. Once they're all seated, he begins.

"Good afternoon and welcome to World History in a Nutshell. I'm Dr. Jackson, and I'll be taking you through this whirlwind tour of the history of Earth. On your desks is a copy of the tentative syllabus

First of all today, I'd like to go around the room and have everyone do a quick introduction so I can put names to faces."

After that was done, Daniel dimmed the lights.

"We're going to start off with an easy class on prehistory today. I have a documentary, which is about human evolution.

Once that's finished, I'm happy to take any questions and then you can take the Caveman Challenge. I'll be interested to see what percentage you'll get at the end."

"Um, hi. I'm J.C. Broots, but you really don't need to call me anything except Broots. I like computers. I live about twenty minutes away when there's no traffic."

"It's nice to meet you, Broots," said Daniel. "What attracted you to taking history this semester?"

"I think history is something that everyone needs to know? And for some reason my prior history teachers never managed to get past World War I because they stayed too long on colonial America."

"I'm Cameron Mitchell," Cameron introduced himself. "I'm from Memphis and I like planes."

"It's nice to see you again, Cam," said Daniel, smiling. "I'm glad I didn't scare you away last year. Looking forward to studying anything in particular?"

"Hi Dr. Jackson! Welcome back! I heard you went to Egypt which is totally cool!" Blair bounced excitedly. "Oh, I'm Blair Sandburg and I was born in the US and I like people."

"Thank you, Blair," said Daniel, grinning. "I did go to Egypt. Got back into New York last night and flew to DC this morning. Glad to have you back in my class."

"Whoa, you must be tired." Blair bounced. "How was it? Was it amazing? Did you like being back on a dig? Did you find anything cool?"

"We had no anthro classes over the summer." Blair frowned, his tone just a wee bit accusatory.

"I'm Sam Winchester. I'm from Lawrence, Kansas, and I like reading," he said, and yes, he was aware of how lame that was.

Daniel nodded. "Anything in particular you like reading?" he asked. "It's nice to meet you, Sam."

"I like pretty much anything except romance novels. But I like classic novels and mysteries the most of all."

"My name is Hermione Granger, and I'm from England which everyone seems to notice," she says. "Is there a textbook for this class?"

"Hello, Hermione," said Daniel. He smiled. "The English accent is definitely a big giveaway there, although I've know some English people be asked if they're from Australia, or New Zealand because of their accent." He shook his head. "There's no overarching textbook to cover the entire syllabus, so I'll be making use of several books over the semester. If you've got anything you're specifically interested in, I could give you a reading list if you'd like?"

"That would be fantastic," she says. "Though I think I'll be specifically interested in all of it. When can I get the list?"

"I'm Molly Hayes." She gave Dr. Jackson a small grin. "I'm from LA and I like comic books."

Daniel grinned back. "Welcome back, Molly; it's great to have you again," he said. "Anything in particular you're looking forward to studying this semester?"

Molly shook her head and shrugged a little. "Anything I don't know now really."

Evie gave a little wave and smiled. "I'm Evelyn Carnahan -- everyone calls me Evie -- I'm from London and Cairo, and I'm going to be an archaeologist. I hope."

"Hello, Evie," said Daniel. "How long did you live in Cairo for? I was just south of there this summer."

"Um, I'm Dean Forrester. I'm from Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Chicago before that. I like reading and building things."

"Nice to meet you, Dean," said Daniel. "Chicago's a great place; I went to school there. What attracted you to this history class?"

Chad raised a hand, a sort of wave without the waving part, remembering the schpiel he'd developed from introductions. "Yasutora Sado, but people call me Chad. Sophomore. Originally from Mexico; more recently from Japan, this time, space, and reality."

"It's nice to meet you, Chad," said Daniel. "I'm afraid that we won't really be looking at much Mexican or Japanese history during this course, but I hope you'll find the rest interesting."
