Library, 8/28

Not being able to stay away one more minute, Yomiko had collected the library key from the office skeletons, narrowly avoiding freaking out all over the place. Really, skeletons? What kind of place was this? She unlocked the library and peeked inside. "Hello? Is anybody...oohhhhh..."

And then she was off, wandering through the stacks like a kid in a candy store.

((The library is open! Come meet the new librarian. No OCD, as it is still summer, la.))

Handbook in one hand, library card in the other, Zuko entered the room. At least the books seemed to indicate he was in the right place. Now he just had to find someone to help him out.

Willow noticed a new student and decided to be friendly.

She waved.

Quietly, 'cause library.

Zuko wasn't a wavey person. He nodded in reply.

Willow came over. "Hi, person who is new to me. I'm Willow."

That wasn't as long as all the other names. "I'm Zuko. Do you work here?"

"I wish," Willow said, wistfully. "I'm just a student. You?"

"I'm a student too," Zuko replied, but he definitely lacked the desire to work in a library.

"What year?" Willow asked. "I'm a junior."

"I think that's what the woman when I enrolled said I was..." Zuko didn't sound too sure.

"When and where are you from?" Willow asked, with sympathy.

"I'm from the Fire Nation," Zuko replied. "I don't think our time matches."

"That's okay," Willow said. "I'm from Sunnydale, California, not quite 2006." This had the benefit of being both true and vague. "But there's plenty of folks here who are from different dimensions and timelines and worlds. It's no problem at all."

"I guess not," he paused. "Did you say 2006?" Alfons said he'd been from 1920 something. That would explain why he felt things were off.

"Hi!" Yomiko said cheerily. "Can I help you?"

He was going to assume this girl did work here. "Yes. I'm Zuko," he said, holding up the library card which had his name on it. "Pippilongstocking said that you would have books that would help me translate things."

"We certainly do...or at least I assume we do." She hadn't actually gotten that far in her investigating yet. "What languages do you need help with?"

"Chinese," he said with a frown, hoping he had remembered correctly what Pippi had told him, "and... What are we speaking now?"

"English...?" Yomiko looked confused. How could someone not know what language they were speaking. "Do you need help translating English to Chinese or Chinese to English? Either way, it'll be 495." Why yes, Yomiko has the Dewey Decimal system memorized. Library of Congress, too.

"I need help translating the characters from Chinese to English," Zuko replied, because while he spoke English, he couldn't actually read it.

"All right, you'll want a Chinese-to-English dictionary. Let me see...495...I think I saw them over there, on the left. Just bring whatever you want to me at the front desk, and I'll check them out for you. And if you need any help, just call."

"I can manage," Zuko said, disappearing to the left.

It took a moment however before he actually got to 495 as he ended up looking at 465 which didn't have any familiar characters at all. When he finally realised his mistake, he pulled out what Pippi had written down the previous day.

Finally there, locating the right dictionary wasn't easy either. Most of the ones he picked up had a writing that looked similar but wasn't quite what he was used to. Finally, he located one that was classical chinese and he breathed a sigh of relief as this was exactly like his own writing.

He picked it up and made his way back to the front of the library. Here was to hoping that he actually picked up a Classical Chinese - English one.

"Did you find what you were looking for?" Yomiko asked brightly when she saw him coming. He had a book in his hand, so she assumed the answer was yes, but it was the form of the thing.

"I believe so," he said as he held it out. "It is English?" he asked her.

"Yes, that's English. Good job." Yomiko took the book from him and checked it out, tucking a bookmark into the front cover. "Good luck, Zuko. I'm Ms. Readman."

Zuko gave her a small bow for some reason he didn't quite understand himself. "How long can I keep the book?"
