Library, Thursday, 8/17

Angela comes in early and strangely alert for her next-to-last time in the library alone, at least until the new librarian starts.

And depending on who the next librarian is, it may be her next-to-last time, period. Because she's pretty much decided that if the next librarian is another one with fur, she's going to take it as a bad sign and quit before Special Collections eats her.

But today? She's mostly sorting through some new books that have come in over the summer and twirling on her stool while she waits for people to have bookish needs.

Jamie popped into the library with the "C" volume of the encyclopedia. "Hey Angela. How's it going?"

"Morning, Jamie," Angela said, glancing up from the stack of nonfiction. "It's good. Though I'm not sure who keeps ordering boks about, like, badgers and pirates."

"Badgers and pirates?" Jamie asked with a confused expression on his face. "I never realized that pirates were that into animals."

"No, I meant-" Angela said, and then decided to go with it.

"Pet badgers were very popular on pirate ships," she deadpanned.

"See? That's something that the encyclopedia totally missed," Jamie said shaking his head. "You would think that the editors of this tome of knowledge would have caught something like that."

Angela glanced over the desk at the book. "You aren't at the p's yet," she said. "That's, um, the problem."

"See that's the problem by reading this in order. For instance under Brigands? It says 'See Pirates'. It's quite frustrating," Jamie said as he picked up volumes D & E of the encyclopedia."

"Sounds it," Angela said sympathetically. "But you probably know a whole lot about badgers, huh?"

"All eight species," Jamie replied. "Seven if you don't count the Asiatic stink badgers which recently were found to be genetically related to skunks than badgers. And yet nothing on how they used to keep pirates company during their long missions of plundering and rum drinking."

Cameron wandered into the library. It'd been a while since he'd set foot in here, so he thought it was time to go harass people. "Yo, Angela!"

"Yo, Cam!," Angela returned. "How's life?"

"Life's good," he smiled. "Not too boring. How about yours?"

"Same," Angela said. "I haven't thought I was anyone else or gotten bitten by a gremlin or broken up with my boyfriend, or anything in almost two weeks, so ... actually, a little boring? But I think I like boring."

"I don't know, I'm kinda missing an invasion," Cameron said with a grin. Sad thing was that he wasn't joking at all.

Angela raised an eyebrow. "Don't say that, we'll get one."

"You're right, I should say it more," he joked.

Angela buried her face in her hands and groaned. "If we do get an invasion of sentient plants that eat people or something? I hope they eat the second floor first."

Briar came into the library with a book he had possibly handwavey checked out.

"Hi Briar," Angela said. "Can I help you?"

Briar smiled at Angela. "Morning Angela. And I want to return this book and check out a new one."

"We do that here," Angela said, reaching for the book. "Do you know what you want?"

"Something on astronomy?"

Angela barely needed to glance at the Dewey Decimal chart for that one. "520s, under the poster of the dog with the book," she pointed. "Popular section, with all the people from outer space here."

Briar laughed. "That doesn't surprise me, for some strange reason."

"It's not exactly shocking," Angela agreed.
