Library, Thursday, 8/17

Angela comes in early and strangely alert for her next-to-last time in the library alone, at least until the new librarian starts.

And depending on who the next librarian is, it may be her next-to-last time, period. Because she's pretty much decided that if the next librarian is another one with fur, she's going to take it as a bad sign and quit before Special Collections eats her.

But today? She's mostly sorting through some new books that have come in over the summer and twirling on her stool while she waits for people to have bookish needs.

"Probably not," Angela said thoughtfully. "Maybe we should just all carry flamethrowers."

She arrived at the books. "We have something called 500 Things That Want to Kill You, she said. "And, ooh, Invasions & You. Think those might help?"

"Sounds good, I think we might need a shopping cart or something," he said as he started pulling out books. "So You're Being Invaded, Now What?, The Monster Mash En Masse and Surviving An Invasion For Dummies. Nice."

"I like the title of Monster Mash," Angela said. "And they should give everyone who enrolls here the For Dummies book."

She craned her neck back, looking at a high shelf. "That's called Invasions: Preconceptions and Pedagogy, but it's about a thousand pages long."

"Whoa," Cameron stood on his tiptoes to grab the book. "Heavy. I think they wanted to make sure you can use it as a weapon too," he said as he sat down on the ground and rested the book in his lap so he could leaf through it.

"Chapter 1: Misunderstandings about Monsters and why they invade," he raised an eyebrow.

Angela groaned. "Please don't tell me it defends the monsters."

Cameron looked further into the book. "I think it's trying to analyse why monsters do what they do," he paused. "Chapter 16: How to negotiate with monsters, Chapter 17: What to do when negotiation fails..."

"Negotiating might actually be useful," Angela said. "I mean, if you get something that's, like, into diplomacy."

Cameron skimmed through the chapter. "Yeah, but the book says to send someone who's expandable in case the monsters decide to eat them."

"Principal Connor or Smith would have liked that," Angela said. "But I don't think Washburn is the type. She seems to like us staying alive."

"Yeah, I like her. She's kinda nice and not creepy like Smith was," Cameron agreed and frowned at the book. "Chapter 23: How to keep your invasion well fed? Who the hell wrote this book?"

"Let me see," Angels said, grabbing for the book. "It says on the back that the writer is 'one of the foremost experts on monsters and warcraft in this demension.' Must be a weird dimension."

"Weirder than Fandom?" Cameron asked as he picked up the Monster Mash book. "Oh cool, this one has monsters and pictures in it."

Angela leaned in, trying to see over Cam's shoulder. "Any cool pictures? Lemme see."

"This (http://www.diabloii.nu/images/monster/Bighead3.jpg) one's ugly," Cameron said as he held up the book for Angela to see.

Angela madea noise that can best be transcribed as, "Grrrrlllgh."

"But the legs are bitty. Maybe you could take those out and it'd just fal over?"

Cameron nodded. "If someone distracts it and we sneak up behind it. It's kinda hunching forward a lot. Wow, this one looks like a walking tree (http://www.diabloii.nu/images/monster/thulk_wire_3.jpg)."

"It does," Angela agreed, treaching to turn a page. "And this one is all cute and shy. Probably makes it more dangerous."

"Yeah, it seems to have a bit of a dual personality going," Cameron pointed out.

"With the different wings?," Angela said. "I see that." She glanced at the mounding pile of books. "How many of these do you want to take out?"

Cameron scratched the back of his neck. "What's the maximum?" He should probably be ashamed that he didn't know this yet.

"No maximum, but you can only keep them for two weeks," Angela said, then thought. "And I'm not sure we'll be open during break week? So you should probably try to get them back to us next week."

"Okay, how about I start with just two? Monster Mash and Invasions & You? I can get more later on," Cameron said.

"Sounds good," Angela said, walking back to the counter. "That should be a start, anyhow. Do you have your card?"

Cameron put the other books back in place. He nearly dropped the big psycho one on his head, but he managed to get it back on the top shelf anyway.

"I should," he said as he finally followed Angela to the desk. He placed the books on the counter and grabbed his wallet, looking for his card. "Got it!" He pulled out in triumph and held it out to Angela.

"Yay!" Angela cheered, taking the card and processing the checkout. "They're yours for the week. Let me know if you find anything cool and useful for someone with almost no combat skills."
