Wilderness Survival Redux - Week 5 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto looked distracted as she addressed the class. "Clothes and shoes. And we're doing today's class in the water, so if you want to wear your clothes the entire class, be my guest."

Once she'd collected clothing from those willing to give it up, she gestured to a set of spears and hand woven nets. "Last week we looked at hunting land animals, this week is fish, so take either a net or a spear, then follow me."

Callisto led the class though the preserve down to the beach, then into the water. Where she proceeded to give a lecture on basic fishing techniques.

"Now spend the rest of the class trying out spear, net and bare hand techniques, but those of you with spears, please be careful of your fellow students, as we don't want to have any accidents that might attract sharks."

"Anything you catch, you're expected to clean and cook yourself."

As far as Dean was concerned, all of these options were too way too loud, what with the splashing and the talking and the breathing and all.

But if he had to do it, the spear was the most attractive option. At least then something else might get to feel like they were being stabbed between the eyes.

Walter took a spear just for the practice with stabbing things and waded out into the water.

Anders waved at Walter with one hand. The other one was beneath the surface, and he was fingerwiggling for all he was worth in hopes of attracting a fish. What he'd do if one actually bit he hadn't bothered to think about yet.

"Going for the stabby option, huh?"

Walter straightened up and grinned. "I have an unfair advantage with my hands."

Not that that advantage didn't translate fairly well with poky things, but hey, stabby was fun.

"It looks like fun, or at least it would be if you actually manage to stab a fish. I'd get frustrated after a while," Anders noted. "Not that I want to have to clean anything if I catch it. Wait, is that . . .?"

He plunged his other hand back beneath the surface and felt around. "Damn. Just seaweed."

Walter watched Anders' attempts at fishing by hand and grinned again. "It seems like your back would get tired after a while, too." He wasn't so much paying attention to his own fishing as he was watching someone get wet and frustrated.

If the someone was good looking, that was just a visual bonus.

"Eh." Anders held himself as still as he could and peered into the water, trying to spot any movement that might indicate fish. "I'm kinda used to this position anyway."

What? He played Pyramid. There was a lot of crouching and bending over there.

Gwynn is concentrating on catching the fish. Froderick would be amused by this class.

Tyler took a net and managed to cast it into the water on his fourth try. Now he just needed to catch something...

Sam, who had no desire whatsoever to catch and clean her own fish, decided to try casting her net. Somewhere around try number five, she stopped catching herself in it. "Progress!"

"This can't be that hard, can it?" Anders muttered to himself as he opted for neither the spear nor the net, waded a little further into the water, and started groping around blindly not dirty beneath the surface. "I mean, all you gotta do is stick your hand underneath the water and feel around until you find a great big succulent fish, right? And then you wiggle your fingers so it looks like bait, and whammo!"

Peter grinned at Anders from the bank. "Works better if you stick to the shallows usually."

Anders gave him a conspiratorial wink from where he was wading in water about halfway up his chest, and not particularly bothering to hide the fact that he was mostly just having fun. "Don't worry. I'll figure that out once I'm done, ah, testing out the deeper water."

Re: FISH! - Bare hands (WSR - Wk5)

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-10 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter grinned back and may possibly have splashed Anders. "I've heard that helps the fish too."

Anders yelped and in his flailing may have accidentally splashed back. "I try to be on good terms with my food, y'know."

"You ask it how it's doing before you eat it?" Peter said, not quite losing his balance and falling into the water while trying to duck Anders' splash.

Bridge wades into the water, and contemplates whether taking his gloves *off* in order to find fish would constitute as cheating.

Re: FISH! - Bare hands (WSR - Wk5)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-08-10 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders splashes Bridge and wades over. "Hey, dude! Mind-whammy a fish or two for me, will you? They don't think my fingers are that tasty."

Re: FISH! - Bare hands (WSR - Wk5)

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-08-10 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge sticks out his tongue and splashes back. "I was actually just trying to figure out if that would be cheating at fishing..." Bridge says.

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-08-10 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's bait!" Anders replies. "Just to get them to come over here, not so they float there and just let us grab 'em. How is that different from worms or those freaky neon egg things?"

Re: FISH! - Bare hands (WSR - Wk5)

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-08-10 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge shrugs and ducks one ungloved hand underwater and tries to think fishie thoughts.

"Did it work?" he asks after a minute.
