Wilderness Survival Redux - Week 5 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto looked distracted as she addressed the class. "Clothes and shoes. And we're doing today's class in the water, so if you want to wear your clothes the entire class, be my guest."

Once she'd collected clothing from those willing to give it up, she gestured to a set of spears and hand woven nets. "Last week we looked at hunting land animals, this week is fish, so take either a net or a spear, then follow me."

Callisto led the class though the preserve down to the beach, then into the water. Where she proceeded to give a lecture on basic fishing techniques.

"Now spend the rest of the class trying out spear, net and bare hand techniques, but those of you with spears, please be careful of your fellow students, as we don't want to have any accidents that might attract sharks."

"Anything you catch, you're expected to clean and cook yourself."

"This can't be that hard, can it?" Anders muttered to himself as he opted for neither the spear nor the net, waded a little further into the water, and started groping around blindly ~~not dirty~~ beneath the surface. "I mean, all you gotta do is stick your hand underneath the water and feel around until you find a great big succulent fish, right? And then you wiggle your fingers so it looks like bait, and whammo!"

Peter grinned at Anders from the bank. "Works better if you stick to the shallows usually."

Anders gave him a conspiratorial wink from where he was wading in water about halfway up his chest, and not particularly bothering to hide the fact that he was mostly just having fun. "Don't worry. I'll figure that out once I'm done, ah, testing out the deeper water."

Peter grinned back and may possibly have splashed Anders. "I've heard that helps the fish too."

Anders yelped and in his flailing may have accidentally splashed back. "I try to be on good terms with my food, y'know."

"You ask it how it's doing before you eat it?" Peter said, not quite losing his balance and falling into the water while trying to duck Anders' splash.

"Yes." Anders snickered, flailed speculatively at what he thought might be a fish but turned out to be his own knee, and did fall over, thereby effectively scaring off any fish, however theoretical, that might be in the vicinity. "If they answer me, I go out for burgers."

"What if the burgers answer you too?" Peter asked, laughing at Anders' antics. "Shall you eat salad and greens?"

Anders sputtered as he got back to his feet, a maneuver that wasn't helped very much by a bit of tide pull that he happened to get caught in at the time. "Maybe. Have you heard the screams of the vegetables?" he asked, deadpan.

"Of course," Peter replied. "Especially celery."

"The celery's the worst." Anders nodded sagely ~~no pun intended~~. "I have to wear earplugs when I eat. It's awful."

"Exactly. Sometimes it's easier just to stick with potatoes. They're rather stolid," Peter said, chuckling.

"They go well with fish, too. Or pretty well by themselves, since the fish thing seems to not be happening." Anders ran one wet hand through his hair (which was also wet, so it didn't make much difference save to mess it up more) and eyed the surface of the water. "Maybe the laughing scares them away?"

"I've heard noise tends to do that," Peter replied. "And we could roast plain potatoes, sprinkle them with salt and not even miss the fish. Which, as you say, is good, as I don't see any either."

"So far I've gotten a shoe and some seaweed, but nothing with scales," Anders said resignedly. "And now a roasted potato is sounding really good."

Bridge wades into the water, and contemplates whether taking his gloves *off* in order to find fish would constitute as cheating.

Anders splashes Bridge and wades over. "Hey, dude! Mind-whammy a fish or two for me, will you? They don't think my fingers are that tasty."

Bridge sticks out his tongue and splashes back. "I was actually just trying to figure out if that would be cheating at fishing..." Bridge says.

"It's bait!" Anders replies. "Just to get them to come over here, not so they float there and just let us grab 'em. How is that different from worms or those freaky neon egg things?"

Bridge shrugs and ducks one ungloved hand underwater and tries to think fishie thoughts.

"Did it work?" he asks after a minute.

Anders frowns as he feels something nibbling on his fingers.

Something really tiny.

Oh, look, minnows.

"Sorta?"

Bridge attempts to think louder.

Here fishie fishie fishie...

And suddenly an entire swarm of minnows is nibbling at Anders's fingers.

"Ack!" he yelps. "That tickles!"
