Wilderness Survival Redux - Week 5 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto looked distracted as she addressed the class. "Clothes and shoes. And we're doing today's class in the water, so if you want to wear your clothes the entire class, be my guest."

Once she'd collected clothing from those willing to give it up, she gestured to a set of spears and hand woven nets. "Last week we looked at hunting land animals, this week is fish, so take either a net or a spear, then follow me."

Callisto led the class though the preserve down to the beach, then into the water. Where she proceeded to give a lecture on basic fishing techniques.

"Now spend the rest of the class trying out spear, net and bare hand techniques, but those of you with spears, please be careful of your fellow students, as we don't want to have any accidents that might attract sharks."

"Anything you catch, you're expected to clean and cook yourself."

Walter straightened up and grinned. "I have an unfair advantage with my hands."

Not that that advantage didn't translate fairly well with poky things, but hey, stabby was fun.

"It looks like fun, or at least it would be if you actually manage to stab a fish. I'd get frustrated after a while," Anders noted. "Not that I want to have to clean anything if I catch it. Wait, is that . . .?"

He plunged his other hand back beneath the surface and felt around. "Damn. Just seaweed."

Walter watched Anders' attempts at fishing by hand and grinned again. "It seems like your back would get tired after a while, too." He wasn't so much paying attention to his own fishing as he was watching someone get wet and frustrated.

If the someone was good looking, that was just a visual bonus.

"Eh." Anders held himself as still as he could and peered into the water, trying to spot any movement that might indicate fish. "I'm kinda used to this position anyway."

What? He played Pyramid. There was a lot of crouching and bending over there.

Walter, however, was unfamiliar with Pyramid, and coughed a little before turning his attention back to the water.

"What's new in the life of Anders, other than learning to catch fish with your bare hands?" Or not.

"Broke up with Conner," Anders said absently, still attempting to squint into the water. "Other than that, not a frakking thing."

Walter lost track of a fish when he turned to cock his head at Anders. "I thought you two weren't, you know, official or anything?"

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-08-10 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"We weren't. Then we decided to try being official and of course that would be when other people started getting into the picture." Anders shrugged. "It's no big deal, really. It's less complicated this way."

"I'm learning that less complicated is something to work for in relationships." He leaned forward and tensed to strike before relaxing again when he realized it wasn't a fish he'd want to eat. I'm glad you're doing a better job of it than I am."

"Aha!" Anders lunged after something only to emerge with a waterlogged old shoe. "Only 'cause I got myself into a mess in the first place, though. If I'd had any sense I would've stayed out of it altogether. But that would involve me having, you know, sense."

Walter snorted and finally brought his spear down in a blurred strike. He lifted the spear and the fish on the end of it up out of the water.

"I think I'd have you beaten on that one."

"Nice catch, man," Anders said admiringly. "And I think we'd only both end up embarrassed or worse if we tried to argue this one out, so I'll take your word for it."

"It's best done over alcohol, not fish," Walter agreed and grinned at the fish flapping on the end of his spear.

"Want some lunch?"

"I'll build the fire, but I'm not cleaning the fish," Anders said instantly.

Walter snickered and headed off to find a good spot to clean the fish. "What's wrong with a bit of guts?"

"There are just some things I don't want to know about my food. Like how much I have in common with it."

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-11 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
"I've seen human guts," Walter said blithely. "You don't have that much in common with a fish."

Anders spluttered a bit. "Whoa. Um, that's good to know, I guess."

"Mmhm," Walter said absently and peeked at Callisto before using his wires to cut open the fish and start cleaning.

Anders set to work on lighting a fire, which was a bit of a challenge since he had to resort to a bow drill to do it. Eventually, though, he got one going.

Sort of.

Walter wandered off to get some large, and presumably not poisonous, leaves to wrap the fish in after rubbing the filets down with salt water. He then stuck the leaf pouches down into the edge of the fire and the slowly developing coals.

"And now we can laze about and do nothing while our food prepares."
