Advanced Computers #3, Wednesday Afternoon 7/26

The computer lab is meeting outside today under a tent with Help Desk emblazoned across the front. Each student has their own workstation complete with phone, toolbox and nifty pocket protector.

"As you can see by my mad sign making skillz, we're going to be manning the help desk today." Abby smiled. "As geeks there is a 99.9% chance that someone is going to ask you to fix their computer. Seriously guys, it's going to happen. You need to know your stuff. Not only how to fix technology...but how to deal with people who don't know how to use it."

"Three rules you have to remember." Abby paced and raised her fingers as she counted them off. "One, not everyone is a geek so remember to tone down the techspeak. Two, people will do incredibly stupid things to their computer, try not to cry over the phone when they tell they've never done a virus scan. Three, the first response is always reboot. It doesn't matter that the problem couldn't be solved by that, it's always the first response."

"Okay, the phone lines are open and people can walk in with a problem. Remember the rules, be polite and come to me if there's a problem you can't fix."

[ooc: Post is up and ready to play! I've got an early appointment so I won't be around till later in the day, but you should all be able to play with each other. Have fun!]

Demyx walked up, carrying his laptop. "Hi. It doesn't work," he complained simply, dropping it the few inches onto the table.

Alec watched the laptop hit the table and then looked up at Demyx. "Did you try turning it on?"

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] electric-sitar.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. It wouldn't turn on." Flipping open the lid, Demyx poked the power button to no avail.

"That's a bitch," Alec said, still watching. "You got a power cord for it?"

[identity profile] electric-sitar.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"A what?" Demyx blinked at him curiously.

"Power cord? The long plug-thing that came with it so you can charge it up?" Alec mimed a long rope with an electrical plug at the end, giving Demyx a look.

Blair walked up carrying his laptop and Hank. "Somehow dirt into my laptop and it's not running well. Can someone take a look at it?"
likethegun: (i'm raising my hand like a good boy)

Sam gave Blair a little wave. "I think I might be able to help," he said, fishing through the toolbox.

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Awesome, man, thank you." Blair carried over the toolbox and set it down gently. "So how are things with you?"
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

Re: Walk In

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-07-26 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Pretty good. Not nearly as interesting now that we're out of the cabins." Sam smirked and grabbed a screwdriver, to try and get the cover off of the laptop. "How about you?"

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hear that. I'm bummed about not being in the cabins longer." Blair shook his head. "Things are pretty cool though."

"Do you knit?"
likethegun: (i'm looking over my shoulder)

Re: Walk In

[personal profile] likethegun 2006-07-26 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam was certain that there was a connecting train of thought there that he'd just missed. "No, I don't know how to knit. Not that I've ever tried to learn, actually."

A gremlin hopped up onto one of the tables carrying a small radio. It shook it, hissed and held it out to show that nothing happened.

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"How can I-" Zack stared at the gremlin. "...help you?"

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] fh-anonymous.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The gremlin shook the radio again and hissed. Then it made a big show of pushing the power button. Nothing happened. The gremlin shook the radio again before setting it down on the table. It pointed to Zack, point to the radio and growled.

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Zack poked at the radio. "Mister...Gremlin thing sir, I'm afraid I don't have the right tools to fix this."

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] fh-anonymous.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The gremlin glared at Zack and picked up the radio again. He mimed pushing the button and then started to hum and dance around. Then the humming stopped while the gremlin continued to dance. Finally, the gremlin stopped dancing and shook the radio. It mimed pushing the button again and shook it again then hissed at it when nothing happened.

The gremlin looked back at Zack and held out the radio again with another growl.

[identity profile] twohalvesofaphd.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry," Zack said speaking very slowly. "But I can't fix it." He pushed the radio back towards the gremlin.

Rory strode in with an old school orange iBook. Ignore the icon omg.

"Hi," she said. "My waffles keep getting burnt."

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey Rory," he said with a grin, then glanced at her laptop. "...Your waffles keep what now?"

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hi, Alec. And they keep getting burned," she said fretfully. "And I'm not entirely sure why. I've cleaned the crumb-catching thingy and the CD drive is clean and the computer itself is just fine. It's just the one mechanism."

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Your laptop makes waffles," he stated, bemused. "Is this like how mine dispenses M&Ms?"

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Possibly?" Rory said with a shy smile. "Did ABC modify yours, too? They did mine. Or, well, Bridgey did. And it's fine except for the waffle-making part! It's very confusing."

Re: Walk In

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-07-26 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, Bridge fixed mine," Alec said, grinning at her. "Even if it's actually a school laptop, I have M&Ms on the go until the end of Summer. Here, let me take a look at it." He reached out and pulled her laptop closer to fiddle with it. "If everything but the waffles are working okay, it's probably not too difficult a fix."
