Advanced Computers #3, Wednesday Afternoon 7/26

The computer lab is meeting outside today under a tent with Help Desk emblazoned across the front. Each student has their own workstation complete with phone, toolbox and nifty pocket protector.

"As you can see by my mad sign making skillz, we're going to be manning the help desk today." Abby smiled. "As geeks there is a 99.9% chance that someone is going to ask you to fix their computer. Seriously guys, it's going to happen. You need to know your stuff. Not only how to fix technology...but how to deal with people who don't know how to use it."

"Three rules you have to remember." Abby paced and raised her fingers as she counted them off. "One, not everyone is a geek so remember to tone down the techspeak. Two, people will do incredibly stupid things to their computer, try not to cry over the phone when they tell they've never done a virus scan. Three, the first response is always reboot. It doesn't matter that the problem couldn't be solved by that, it's always the first response."

"Okay, the phone lines are open and people can walk in with a problem. Remember the rules, be polite and come to me if there's a problem you can't fix."

[ooc: Post is up and ready to play! I've got an early appointment so I won't be around till later in the day, but you should all be able to play with each other. Have fun!]

"Your laptop makes waffles," he stated, bemused. "Is this like how mine dispenses M&Ms?"

"Possibly?" Rory said with a shy smile. "Did ABC modify yours, too? They did mine. Or, well, Bridgey did. And it's fine except for the waffle-making part! It's very confusing."

"Yeah, Bridge fixed mine," Alec said, grinning at her. "Even if it's actually a school laptop, I have M&Ms on the go until the end of Summer. Here, let me take a look at it." He reached out and pulled her laptop closer to fiddle with it. "If everything but the waffles are working okay, it's probably not too difficult a fix."

"I'm really, really dumb with electronic stuff," she confessed. "So I wasn't sure if this was an appliance kind of thing, or if it had to do with the computer part."

"I'd guess the mechanisms aren't combined, since a waffle-maker isn't that complicated a device," Alec said, unscrewing the clamshell carefully and laying it open. He blinked at the inside of the machine, a little taken aback. "Whoa, okay. I have no idea how Bridge managed this, but I think I can still fix it."

Alec smiled at Rory. "This is probably the most interesting tech support problem I've had all day."

"Happy to be interesting," she said, blushing a little and trying to peer at the inner workings of her computer. "See, I'm an idiot, so I have no idea how that's even different-looking from the inside of a normal computer. Um, aside from the giant waffle iron. I know that much is out of place."

Alec tilted the laptop so she could see inside, then chuckled. "Yeah, and that seems mostly it," he said. "Except he somehow made a lot of room in order to get the waffle iron in there and included casing so the batter doesn't get into the workings. I don't even want to know how he managed to keep the heat from messing with the electronics." He shook his head, impressed despite himself, and pulled out a couple tools to work on the problem. "So how are you lately? Don't think I've seen you much since the mummy thing."

"Nothing very interesting has been happening," Rory replied with a half-smile. "My mom had her baby, so you're looking at a new big sister. And the thing on Saturday got me, so I was blonde and convinced I was destined to drop out of beauty school for awhile. Aside from that? My July's been pretty quiet. What about you?"

"Congrats on the new sister," Alec said, glancing up from the laptop with a grin. "And being blonde's better than a pan to the head, so I'd say it sounds like you got off kind of easy."

"Brother," she corrected. "And thanks. I look bad as a blonde, but I'd take looking washed-out over being knocked out any day. Poor Dean."

"Brother, sorry," he said. "And yeah, really. Remind me never to piss Dawn off." Alec chewed at his lip and fell silent as he used the soldering iron on something inside the laptop. "Okay... there. I think that'll take care of it."

"Yay!" Rory beamed at him. "Thank you muchly. Do I owe you anything?"

"Nah, this is an assignment," he said, grinning back at her. "Though I wouldn't mind trying your waffles sometime."

She blushed again. "Count on it. Stop by anytime," she said, picking up the laptop and heading off with a wave over her shoulder.
