Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

"Sure."Rory bit her lip. "So...I remember you're from a place that I'd never heard of. Where is it again?"

"I was born in Hajra but am more recently from Winding Circle Temple in Emelan." Briar replied easily.

"Uh huh. Who did you live with?" Rory asked.

"Right before I came here, I lived with Rosethorn and Lark and my foster-sisters Sandry, Daja, and Tris." Briar leaned back in his chair.

"That's cool," Rory remarked. "Was everything fine and peachy at home?"

"As 'fine and peachy' as one guy living with five girls can be, yup."

"Did you go to school?" she asked.

"This is my first time in school." Briar started tracing a vine on his hand.

"What'd you do before that?" She watched him trace the vine curiously.

Briar continued tracing the vine carefully and thought of his response. A small smile twitched on his face. "Briar Moss didn't exist until four years ago, so nothing really."

"And before that?" she prompted, smiling.

Briar smiled back. "I lived in Hajra and was in a gang."

Rory looked impressed. "What kind of gang stuff did you do?"

Briar considered an answer he didn't mind giving and didn't give out too much. "Got into fights, tormented shop keepers and shoppers, and other stuff that as a ten-year-old I though were great fun."

"Did you get in trouble?" she asked, idly eyeing his rather tailored-looking wardrobe.

Briar paused. "Yes."

"How so?" she asked, resting her chin in her hand.

Briar considered his answer and grinned. "Got caught doing something I wasn't supposed to."

"And what happened? Were you arrested?" she asked curiously.

"Yes I was." Briar was tracing the tattoos almost unconsciously now.

"Oooh," Rory said, looking impressed again. "What were you arrested for doing?"

"Stealing." Briar raised a brow at Rory's expression.

"Eep." She paused, thinking. "Just the one time?"

"No, three times. And you got the first half of my secret."

"Go me!" she cheered, and then sobered. "I mean, not so much since you got arrested and that's terrible, but yay for doing the assignment correctly, at least in part."
