Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

"Yes I was." Briar was tracing the tattoos almost unconsciously now.

"Oooh," Rory said, looking impressed again. "What were you arrested for doing?"

"Stealing." Briar raised a brow at Rory's expression.

"Eep." She paused, thinking. "Just the one time?"

"No, three times. And you got the first half of my secret."

"Go me!" she cheered, and then sobered. "I mean, not so much since you got arrested and that's terrible, but yay for doing the assignment correctly, at least in part."

"Wanna keep going for the second half?" Briar tried to sound like he didn't care either way.

"Sure," she said, nodding. "Um...what were you stealing?"

"Some scarves, a blokes wallet, and the last time was a jewelry store."

"Did you have help?" she asked. "Or get arrested together, at least?"

"The last time, yes. The other two were just me."

"Why were you stealing scarves and a wallet by yourself?" she asked.

Briar gave Rory an odd look. "Why do you need more than one person to pick pockets?"

"A lookout, maybe?" she suggested. "I don't know. I've never tried."

"Lookout's what got us caught the last time. And I'll say never trying is a good thing."

"Were you any good at it? Aside from the getting caught part."

Briar smirked. "I'd like to think so. Can still get into places I'm not supposed to when I need to."

"You'll be handy around here," she decided. "And I have no idea what the second half of the secret is. I'm really, really bad at this."

Briar laughed. "Want me to tell you so we can move on to yours?"

"Sure," she agreed, blushing.

Briar couldn't figure out why she was blushing. "I was sentanced to a life-time of hard labor at the docks before I turned eleven. So...got any siblings?"

"Two," she said. "A newborn half-brother and a year old half-sister. Opposite parents, though."

Briar smiled. "Are you close with your family?"

"With my mom, yes," she nodded. "My dad, not so much."

"What happened with your father?"
