Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

Briar smirked. "I'd like to think so. Can still get into places I'm not supposed to when I need to."

"You'll be handy around here," she decided. "And I have no idea what the second half of the secret is. I'm really, really bad at this."

Briar laughed. "Want me to tell you so we can move on to yours?"

"Sure," she agreed, blushing.

Briar couldn't figure out why she was blushing. "I was sentanced to a life-time of hard labor at the docks before I turned eleven. So...got any siblings?"

"Two," she said. "A newborn half-brother and a year old half-sister. Opposite parents, though."

Briar smiled. "Are you close with your family?"

"With my mom, yes," she nodded. "My dad, not so much."

"What happened with your father?"

"He's just not around," she said, shrugging. "He lives far away from here. Mom is a teacher at the school, though."

"Oh? What does she teach?" Briar leaned forward.

"Business," Rory supplied. "She's on maternity leave at the moment."

"So...any interesting hobbies? Am I even close?"

"You're on the right track with the family stuff," she said. "Hobbies...I fence, and read a lot. And I write for the paper. I like school. I'm weird."

"Do you and your Mother argue ever? And I like to learn, so what's wrong with like school?"

"Sometimes," she admitted. "Not recently. And not many people like school like I do. I get stared at for it sometimes."

"Do your arguments have to do with your secret?"

"Yes," Rory said, nodding.

"Was it something you did?"

Rory thought for a moment. "Yes and no. It was more about something I didn't do."

Briar grinned. "Did you not doing this thing result in the kitchen burning down?"

"No," Rory laughed. "But that's just because I know better than to try to cook, um, ever."

Briar laughed. "I can relate. Did you break something?"

"A promise," Rory said.

"Did you promise to do something or not do something?"
