Talent Show, Fandom High Auditorium, Friday Afternoon, 07.07.06

The all too familiar opening chords of Europe's The Final Countdown sounded and after a short delay for dramatic effect, GOB danced out onto the auditorium stage. He pulled blue and gold handkerchief chains out of both sleeves (which was difficult with a hand still in a cast) until the chains clearly met in the middle underneath his shirt. A large burst of smoke appeared on stage and when it cleared, the handkerchiefs had turned into two cages of doves. One of the doves fell over in the cage, choking on the smoke.

Over the next couple minutes he disappeared cards, linked and unlinked rings, and made his cast say "GO GREMLINS." It was slightly more impressive than should normally be expected from GOB.

When the music wound down, GOB stepped up to the microphone. "Welcome, ladies, gentlemen, and others. Today you will witness the finest example of amateur talent you have ever seen. Unless they suck. If they suck, you should make sure they know they suck. Not just today. Boo them this weekend, too. They'll deserve it for making me a liar."

"Anyway, let's hear it for today's acts!"

"Okay," Willow said. "I think so. Sure, we're going on five whole days now which greatly increases the chances that he's been mauled by rabid hampsters, but I'm trying not to think about it."

Bel blinked. "Are rabid hamsters a problem where he comes from?"

"I have no idea," Willow said. "But that's just my point! There could be sharp yet tiny teeth puncturing his index finger right now for all I know!"

"I'm sure he's fine," Bel said reassuringly. "I've seen him spar and he can hold his own against any rabid hamsters that cross his path."

"That's true," Willow said. "He's very good with a sword. I just hope the hampsters don't overwhelm him with numbers."

"Well, if he's a knight, doesn't he have soldiers to command?" Bel asked. "They can throw themselves on the hamsters."

"Not if the hampsters sneak up in the middle of the night while he's sleeping and bam! Eat off his leg before anyone can notice."

"That's what armor is for," Bel pointed out. "They're not going to gnaw through that. Unless they're Vorpal Hamsters."

"Good point." Willow thought about it. "They could be hampsters with screwdrivers."

"They don't have opposable thumbs," Bel said.

"Well, if rabid hamsters are a problem in Peter's dimension," Bel said, "I'm sure he has safeguards in place against them. Traps, snares, stuff like that."

"True," Willow said. "Unless the hampsters are sneaky."

"Yep," Willow said. "Very old magic too, from what he says."

"Well, there you go then," Bel said. "Protection spells against rabid hamsters."

"What about hampster warlocks?"

"They could have friends," Willow said. "Hampsters can be very personable."

"Has anyone ever told you you're a pessimist?" Bel asked.

Willow shook her head. "Nope. Never. Why? Do you think they're saying that about me behind my back?"

Bel couldn't help but laugh a little. "Paranoid, too. But paranoia is underrated as a good trait to have."

"I say if you think of all possible outcomes and plan for them that's the way to stay alive," Willow said. "I'm still here, so clearly it's working."

"A good dose of paranoia is healthy," Bel said. "Kept me alive for years."

"See?" Willow said. "We're on the right track. Now all I need to do is convince Peter to beware of hampsters with a penchant for magic and carpentry."
