Baking Workshop 6/19, Monday Morning

Piper grins at the students as they arrive. "We are going to make pie today, apple to be specific."

She points to the pie she made for the class. "You'll need to work with a partner. One of you will make the crust and the other will make the filling. Then you'll both work together to assemble the pie. Since there are eight of you, you should all have a partner. If anyone is absent, I'll be someone's partner."

She hands them a list of ingredients and instructions. "Have fun!"

Equipment Needed

Rolling Pin

Knife

Measuring Spoons

Measuring Cups

Dough Blender

Cutting Board

Pie Pan

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

6 tablespoons butter

6 tablespoons shortening

6 to 8 tablespoons ice water

Instructions

Warm butter in microwave until soft, but not melted.

Mix flour, salt and sugar in bowl.

Add butter, shortening and ice water.

Wrap pie crust in plastic wrap then place in refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Ingredients

5 peeled apples

1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Peel and slice apples.

Soak them in water with a tablespoon of lemon juice. This will help prevent them from turning brown.

Mix flour, cinnamon, salt and vinegar in large mixing bowl.

Mix apples into the pie flavoring.

Assembling the Pie

Now that your pie crust has had time to cool divide it into two equal halves.

Roll one of the balls of pie crust out until it is around 1/8 of an inch thick.

Wrap the dough around the rolling pin and unroll it onto your pie pan.

Take a fork and poke holes in the bottom of the crust to let steam out as it cooks.

Place the apples in the pie in a pattern so that they all fit in the pie.

Pour the leftover coating over them.

Place about 4 chunks of butter on top of apple filling.

Roll out the remaining pie dough and place it on top.

Create a pattern around the edge of the pie by using the back of a knife.

Baking the Pie

Cut long strips of tinfoil and place them around the edge of the pie.

Bake pie at 400 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

Take tinfoil off about ten minutes before the pie is baked to have a golden brown edge.

"Yeah." Maia said with a big smile. Relieved she would have someone to buddy up with.

"Cool," Jude grinned, and promptly knocked the box of shortening off the counter.

Seeing it would fall before Jude hit it, Maia's hand shot out and caught it before it hit the floor. "Why don't you let me um, arrange everything yeah?" She said with a smile.

"Sure," Jude agreed sheepishly, backing off a bit. "I'm not usually this clumsy." He reconsidered. "Actually, I am."

"It's ok, I've baked with you before. I'm prepared this time." She said grinning at him as she started to make sure all the ingredients were pushed back onto the counter and out of harms way.

"So d'you want to do the filling or the crust?" Jude asked, checking over the ingredients. "I can peel apples pretty good, if you want me to cover that bit . . ."

"Yeah that sounds good. I'll do the little cut outs and make the crust all pretty..." Maia said with a nod. She didn't want to admit that she was not all that comfortable with peeling things or with knives.

Jude grinned. "Awesome." He pulled apples out of the bag and began juggling them for Maia's amusement for a moment as he located the peeling knife.

Maia beamed at him, she had never been able to do that. "Cool." She said as she picked up two of the apples and tried to toss them up. They ended up hitting the counter and bruising. "Ah, well...I like them a little banged up anyway." She said with a smile as she pulled over a mixing bowl to start on her crust.

Jude chuckled, setting the apples down and beginning to peel one in one long strand, cutting away from himself to avoid nickable things like fingers and torsos.

"So . . ." Yeah, he had a pretty much one-track mind. "What'd ya think of Setsuna?"

"I think she is really nice." Maia gushed happily. "One of the nicest people I've met so far this summer."

The wattage of Jude's grin could have powered a small city. "Really? You like her? Isn't she great?"

Maia nodded happily, "She is really awesome." Maia said smiling just a bright at him. "Does she like me?" Maia asked, she was a little nervous to hear the answer she had to admit.

"Yeah, I think she did," Jude said. "I mean, I didn't ask her right out, but she was talkin' and she's usually quiet. So yeah. I think she did."

Maia looked really pleased about this. She thought Jude was really nice and so she was more then thrilled that his girlfriend seemed to like her as well.

"I didn't mention the room thing yet," he said, chopping up the apples into the bowl with swift strokes. He really was pretty good with the knife. "I figure we'll worry about it later."

"Yeah it's cool. I mean hell, maybe you two will end up sharing next term." Maia smiled at him as she measured out her flour.

That made Jude blush ~~because kids show, yo~~ and the knife slipped for a moment. "Uh, I d-dunno about that . . ."

Maia grinned at his blushing, it was cute. "You guys make a really cute couple. Really, it's refreshing to see a couple that isn't all over each other all the time you know?"

That wasn't really helping with the blushing. "Setsuna's kinda new to the whole dating thing . . . and my last girlfriend dumped me . . . so I guess we're still figuring the whole thing out, y'know?"

"Oh, I'm sorry. About your girlfriend dumping you I mean. That's harsh."

Jude shrugged. "She just changed so much, and I couldn't keep up. I was pretty bummed about it at the time." He smiled. "But hey, now I have Setsuna, so life's good again."

Maia nodded. "Yeah people change." Maia said with a frown. "It's annoying but they do." She sighed and then smiled at him. "But it's good that you have a good life and you have Setsuna."

"Aww, geez, I'm being a total jerk, aren't I?" Jude realised suddenly, smacking himself in the forehead. "All I'm doin' is talkin' about Setsuna. Sorry, bra."

Maia tilted her head and looked at him. "It's not a problem at all. You've got a girlfriend and your excited." She said with a smile while she started stirring up her mixture to turn it into dough.
