Baking Workshop 6/19, Monday Morning

Piper grins at the students as they arrive. "We are going to make pie today, apple to be specific."

She points to the pie she made for the class. "You'll need to work with a partner. One of you will make the crust and the other will make the filling. Then you'll both work together to assemble the pie. Since there are eight of you, you should all have a partner. If anyone is absent, I'll be someone's partner."

She hands them a list of ingredients and instructions. "Have fun!"

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Rolling Pin

Knife

Measuring Spoons

Measuring Cups

Dough Blender

Cutting Board

Pie Pan

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

6 tablespoons butter

6 tablespoons shortening

6 to 8 tablespoons ice water

Instructions

Warm butter in microwave until soft, but not melted.

Mix flour, salt and sugar in bowl.

Add butter, shortening and ice water.

Wrap pie crust in plastic wrap then place in refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Ingredients

5 peeled apples

1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Peel and slice apples.

Soak them in water with a tablespoon of lemon juice. This will help prevent them from turning brown.

Mix flour, cinnamon, salt and vinegar in large mixing bowl.

Mix apples into the pie flavoring.

Instructions

Assembling the Pie

Now that your pie crust has had time to cool divide it into two equal halves.

Roll one of the balls of pie crust out until it is around 1/8 of an inch thick.

Wrap the dough around the rolling pin and unroll it onto your pie pan.

Take a fork and poke holes in the bottom of the crust to let steam out as it cooks.

Place the apples in the pie in a pattern so that they all fit in the pie.

Pour the leftover coating over them.

Place about 4 chunks of butter on top of apple filling.

Roll out the remaining pie dough and place it on top.

Create a pattern around the edge of the pie by using the back of a knife.

Baking the Pie

Cut long strips of tinfoil and place them around the edge of the pie.

Bake pie at 400 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

Take tinfoil off about ten minutes before the pie is baked to have a golden brown edge.

That made Jude blush because kids show, yo and the knife slipped for a moment. "Uh, I d-dunno about that . . ."

Maia grinned at his blushing, it was cute. "You guys make a really cute couple. Really, it's refreshing to see a couple that isn't all over each other all the time you know?"

Re: Bake

That wasn't really helping with the blushing. "Setsuna's kinda new to the whole dating thing . . . and my last girlfriend dumped me . . . so I guess we're still figuring the whole thing out, y'know?"

Re: Bake

"Oh, I'm sorry. About your girlfriend dumping you I mean. That's harsh."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude shrugged. "She just changed so much, and I couldn't keep up. I was pretty bummed about it at the time." He smiled. "But hey, now I have Setsuna, so life's good again."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia nodded. "Yeah people change." Maia said with a frown. "It's annoying but they do." She sighed and then smiled at him. "But it's good that you have a good life and you have Setsuna."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aww, geez, I'm being a total jerk, aren't I?" Jude realised suddenly, smacking himself in the forehead. "All I'm doin' is talkin' about Setsuna. Sorry, bra."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia tilted her head and looked at him. "It's not a problem at all. You've got a girlfriend and your excited." She said with a smile while she started stirring up her mixture to turn it into dough.

"You have a boyfriend hidden away somewhere?" he asked with a sideways little smile, checking the recipe for what to add to his now cut-up apples.

Re: Bake

Maia blushed furiously at the question. "Um not quite. I- well..." Maia thought for a moment unsure of what to title Susan as..."Well I have a 'friend'" She raised her flour covered hands to do a quote mark "And, well we...well we're really good friends." She decided finally on that description of what she and Susan were.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh." Jude's ears were definitely pink at this point. "That's cool. Does he go here?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia's turn to be red faced now. "Um, no she just graduated. I- well that's who I was spending the weekend with, actually."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh. Oh!" Jude looked sheepish, dropping the bag of sugar and catching it before it spilt. "Sorry, bra, I shouldn't have assumed . . ." He chuckled, recovering. "So I guess you had a good weekend, then. Setsuna showed up before you get around to tellin' me."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"I did yeah. I mean, Susan had to work a lot so G'Kar kept me company but..." Maia cleared her throat a little and smiled. "But I saw Susan a fair share outside of her duties."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"I guess that's good, then," Jude stuttered, his ears still defiantly red but he was making an effort to be cool about it.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia nodded. "Yeah it was." She said lost in thought for a moment.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude's teenage mind started supplying some of the pictures in those magazines Jonesy always managed to get his hands on. He quickly dragged his thoughts back to Setsuna. Er, baking. That's what he was doing. That, and trying to stop blushing.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sorry." Maia realized she had lost herself in a thought for a moment. Blushing furiously Maia laid the pie dough out onto the counter to start rolling it out to lay in the pan.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude chuckled. "'Sokay. I think you're allowed. How's the crust comin'?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Almost ready to toss it in the pan." Maia said beaming. Maybe she would make Susan a pie instead of a bunt cake.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Groovy, bra. Filling's almost ready, too." A thought struck him. "Hey, if we have some leftover dough I wonder if we can make cinnamon rolls."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia looked thoughtful. "I bet we could." She smiled then "Big gooey ones."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude grinned. "It's somethin' my mom always does when she has extra pie crust. Ya take butter and spread it over the extra crust, and then ya sprinkle on cinnamon and sugar. They're yummy."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-06-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia smiled at him. "I like that. Lets do it." She was excited by the idea of making something without the guidelines. Laying the dough carefully in the pie pan she waited for Jude to pour in the filling.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Cool." Jude hefted the bowl, briefly Atlas-posing before pouring the mixture in, in a circular pattern that evened it out. He set the bowl down and saluted. "Filling away!"
