Library [06/08]

Rory managed to make it into the library fairly early, dragging the damn book with her as well as her laptop, with a cup of coffee in hand and four wide-eyed, fluffy kittens firmly attached to the legs of her jeans.

The library was open, and would likely remain so for most of the day.

Buffy held up one of the little blue eyed kittens for Willow to see. "Kittens! Itty bitty kittens!"

"Clingy kittens," Willow agreed. There was a black and white one peeking out of her backpack now. "Poor little things. I've been trying to feed them."

"They're cuter than pudding," Rory decided. "Hi, Willow. I did something bad. Did you get my email?"

"I did," Willow said. She put her bag on the table and took out her laptop. "What are we talking about on a scale of badness? Invited a vampire into your room? Love spell gone awry? Accidentally helping a demon ascend and take over the town?"

"Kind of closest to that last one, I guess," Rory told her. "I read aloud from this - " she held up the book " - and bad stuff started happening. And by bad stuff I mean pudding rain and the kitties, but I think it's also giving people nightmares or something, too. No idea how to stop it."

Dawn glanced up from her reading and was comforted by the sight of Willow at her laptop. "I'm not sure, but I think there's something here about speaking the name of...something...."

"Speaking the name of something?" Rory asked, looking over. "Like, to fix it? Or did I say a name without meaning to and that's how it all went bad?"

"I can't tell, there's a kitten butt in my way," Dawn said, picking up a white kitten and depositing it to the side of the book. It started playing tag with her fingers as she looked at the page again. "Um...not sure. I don't know Egyptian that well yet," she said apologetically. "Is there a dictionary?"

Rory nodded and sifted through the texts on a table to find a dictionary before handing it to Dawn. "The kittens are...really not conducive to this, are they?"

Dawn opened the dictionary and began trying to find the combination of hieroglyphs she was looking for. A kitten climbed up her chair and sat on her other shoulder, hiding in her hair and sniffing.

"No, but they're kitteny and cute." She scritched the one pulling on her earring. "Beats the heck out of, well, almost anything else it could have been. Like, hey, they could have been demon kitties. That would have been worse. Er, they're not demon kitties, right? Did we check that already?"

"They don't seem demonic," said Rory, picking up a kitten and peering at it. It gave a kitteny yawn. "They're awfully cute demons if that's the case. Maybe they're like the gnomes."

"Awwwwwww," Dawn said, dragging her pencil along the table for one of the kittens to chase. "Okay, so non-demonic, no prophecies, and Egypt. That's not so bad--I've had to research apocalypses with a lot less information." Okay, they'd had months to do it and it had been in a language she knew...

"I've been at it all night with the actual book," Rory said, scrubbing sleepily at her eyes. "I'm just looking to figure out how we can stop it at this point, really."

"You should try to grab a nap or something," Dawn suggested, having pulled a few research all-nighters already, "we're here and we've got fresh eyes. That way, when we're all pooped later, you can take over. Just leave the book here so we can look at it."

"Nah, I'm fine. I slept a little bit this morning. I don't need a whole lot," Rory replied. She grabbed a few books. "I think I'm going to stick myself behind the desk so people have a reference point. Take notes on anything you find and we'll talk about it at the meeting, okay?"

"Oh no," Willow said. "No reading aloud in front of the books! That way lies badness. Or great embarassment if you're reading from a romance novel."

"Xander set a book on fire when we were in England by speaking Latin in front of it," Rory remembered. "I just have this really bad habit of trying to work phonetically when I'm translating stuff."

"There was this incident in sixth grade with me and a Judy Blume novel where - actually? Not important right now," Willow nodded firmly. "How can I help? Computer? Books? Magic? All of the above?"

"All of the above," Rory nodded. "Anything you can contribute. So far we know that I caused plagues, and I'm pretty sure the nightmares going around are part of it. And there was a tiny gross dead thing that met Tyler yesterday, but I'm not sure if that's related."

Willow fired up her computer and got to researching. "Do you know how you did it?"

"I read aloud this passage right here," she said, picking up the book and pointing to the incriminating part. "And then nothing really happened until there was coffee pond and pudding rain and Anakin having a nightmare and Cal acting weird...."

Willow peered at the book. "Okay, I'll start researching those symbols online, see if I can find anything. I shall also take a moment to squee over our school's system because oh my GOD the kinds of websites I can access here!"

Sadly? Willow wasn't even referring to porn.

"I hadn't really noticed," Rory replied, arching a brow. "There aren't problems with, um, firewalls or anything?"

Rory? Knew next to nothing about computers.

"Not for me," Willow grinned.

"Is that legal?" Rory asked fretfully.
