Baking Workshop 6/5, Monday Morning

Piper pointed out today's samples as the students arrived. "We're gonna try some foreign cuisine today. You'll be making crepes, which are French. When you finish making them, feel free to add any filling you want to."

She glanced at the various choices sitting on the counter. "We've got strawberries, bananas, chocolate sauce, various jams, etc. You can even add more than one if you feel like it."

"I'll be around, as usual, if you have questions," Piper added, handing each student a list of instructions.

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Frying Pan

Spatula

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup water

2 eggs

2 tbsp melted butter

2 teaspoons sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs.

Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine.

Add the sugar, vanilla and butter; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.

Pour the batter into the pan, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe.

Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown.

Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Add whatever filling you want and then roll them up.

Anders wiped the last of the batter off his cheek and smiled weakly. "I think I can get it, but thanks. Wow. We're the best two cooks ever."

"You missed the Thanksgiving they called the CDC," Sam said, trying to make him feel better. "You're much better than that."

Re: Bake

Anders didn't know what CDC stood for, but he assumed it was something pretty serious. "Wait until we get more complicated stuff to do," he said, dabbing the ointment onto the burned patches of his arm and face. "Next time? We use less heat. Or less oil. I'm not sure."

"Are we going to be allowed to come back next time, do you think?" She whispered. "And I think it may be both."

"I dunno. What are the odds of this classroom still standing by the end of the session?" Anders whispered back.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
"I put the odds at about 2 to 1 right now. Worse if we have to flambe anything."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, gods," Anders said in horror. "You don't think we'll have to barbecue anything at any point, do you?"

Re: Bake

"She wouldn't..." Sam's expression probably matched Anders's.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sam facepalmed. "Maybe there'll be an invasion and we'll get out of it?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Anders facepalmed too. "I can't believe we're actually hoping for this. And yet."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
"And yet..." Sam looked at the charred pain and the now empty fire extinguisher, then over at Anders. "I think I'm calling today done on the cooking front."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders picked up the mixing bowl of batter, which was topped with a big glob of extinguisher foam. "Yeah, I think a strategic retreat is definitely in order here. Should we start stocking up on sandbags for next week?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, maybe," she said, sighing as she gathered bowls and spoons and measuring cups to begin washing them. "Any idea what we're supposed to be making? I forgot."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders took a spatula to the frying pan and started trying to scrape the charred mess out of it. "Kind of hard to tell from this, but apparently there was supposed to be peanut butter or bananas to go on it at some point. Oh well." He made a face. "I don't like bananas anyway."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Actually, they're really good with peanut butter," Sam said. "Maybe we should just make sandwiches?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can totally get behind something that involves no open flames."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"We just need bread, peanut butter, bananas, and a butter knife," Sam said, feeling more confident.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Grateful to get away from the stove for a while, Anders scrambled off to find the required ingredients (he had to hunt around a bit for the bread) and brought them back, although with strawberries for himself instead of bananas. "Well, at least we won't leave here completely hungry."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"True." Sam opened the peanut butter jar and hunted around for two knives, one of which she handed to Anders, handle first. "Elvis used to deep fry them, but I think we've had enough hot oil for one day."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"I might have had enough hot oil to last me the rest of my life." As Anders sawed a few strawberries into slices -- hard to do with a butter knife, but he wasn't feeling up to risking sharp objects right now -- he looked a little bit green at the thought of deep-fried peanut butter sandwiches.

Strawberries and peanut butter? Hey, why not?

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam spread the peanut butter on the bread, then sliced up a banana into thin discs and began laying them out with incredible precision on one of the slices of bread.

"Strawberries? Really?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders shrugged. "Hey, even if we didn't manage to make what we were supposed to, I feel like being a little adventurous. Anyway, bananas kind of give me the creeps, 'cause they get all mushy in my mouth."

He eyed his sandwich thoughtfully. "It'll be interesting, anyway."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam put the other piece of bread on top of the bananas and took a bite, nodding to indicate that the peanut butter was safe.

"Let me know how it turns out."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders squashed a heavily peanut-buttered piece of bread on top of the strawberried half of the sandwich and bit in, chewing thoughtfully. "Not bad," he said after he swallowed, "but strawberries are better with chocolate."
