Baking Workshop 6/5, Monday Morning

Piper pointed out today's samples as the students arrived. "We're gonna try some foreign cuisine today. You'll be making crepes, which are French. When you finish making them, feel free to add any filling you want to."

She glanced at the various choices sitting on the counter. "We've got strawberries, bananas, chocolate sauce, various jams, etc. You can even add more than one if you feel like it."

"I'll be around, as usual, if you have questions," Piper added, handing each student a list of instructions.

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Frying Pan

Spatula

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup water

2 eggs

2 tbsp melted butter

2 teaspoons sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs.

Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine.

Add the sugar, vanilla and butter; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.

Pour the batter into the pan, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe.

Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown.

Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Add whatever filling you want and then roll them up.

The look on Sam's face? Yeah, that's pretty close to terror. She began hunting for a fire extinguisher.

Just in case.

Anders signed in, took a sample crepe, and more or less immediately decided he was going to blow this week's assignment so, so badly.

"Hey, Carter. I think we're doomed now," said Anders, who probably had an identical expression on his face.

And the fire extinguisher she'd given him for Christmas hanging from a loop of string on his belt.

"I'm cooking near you today, Anders," Sam decided, setting out her ingredients. "And yeah, I'm gonna go with doomed. Has anyone called the clinic and checked if they're prepared to handle burns?"

Not that she was procrastinating or anything.

"Sounds good to me," agreed Anders. "Maybe we should be, like, off to the side or something so people don't get caught in the crossfire or whatever. And yeah, I think the clinic's pretty well equipped for burns. Didn't somebody get half blown up the other week or something? I mean, if they can handle that, they're good to go for anything. Except maybe -- oh frak, pieces of flying exploded frying pan? Maybe we should check."

He wasn't procrastinating either. And he wasn't staring at the frying pan in abject terror. Nope.

Sam nodded and glanced around the room. "Yes, definitely off to the side." She pointed over towards a corner. "Like over there, maybe? Um, do you think there's cinder block or sandbags or something we should put up? And what about face masks or protective padding?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Padding might catch on fire if we get too close to the stove, but I can definitely go with building a bunker or something," said Anders, who'd started hauling ingredients and cooking equipment toward the corner. "No idea where we're gonna get sandbags though. Sacks of flour, maybe, but then nobody else could cook."

"And that would be bad," Sam decided after gathering her measuring cups, spoons, and spatulas. "We could hike down to the beach and get some sand, maybe?" She suggested hopefully, dumping everything on the counter.

Hey, anything to get her out of the kitchen. Bunkers she understood.

After sending an email to Angel, Veronica poked her head in to Piper's workshop to see if she could score some breakfast.

"Hey, how's it going?" she asked quietly, not wanting to interrupt.

"Only if you made them," Veronica replied, noticing the terrified looks on Sam & Anders' faces.

Veronica grinned. "You're the best," she said, filling a crepe with bananas and chocolate sauce. It was fruit, therefore it was a healthy breakfast.

"Are you as glad as I am to be back in the dorms?" she asked Piper before taking a big bite of her crepe.

Willow stared at the ingredients in front of her.

Yep, that was a look of panic on her face.

Veronica nodded, her mouth full of crepe.

After chewing and swallowing, she said, "I so very much agree."

"Nope, just hanging out," Veronica said before taking another bite of her crepe.
