Baking Workshop 6/5, Monday Morning

Piper pointed out today's samples as the students arrived. "We're gonna try some foreign cuisine today. You'll be making crepes, which are French. When you finish making them, feel free to add any filling you want to."

She glanced at the various choices sitting on the counter. "We've got strawberries, bananas, chocolate sauce, various jams, etc. You can even add more than one if you feel like it."

"I'll be around, as usual, if you have questions," Piper added, handing each student a list of instructions.

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Frying Pan

Spatula

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup water

2 eggs

2 tbsp melted butter

2 teaspoons sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs.

Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine.

Add the sugar, vanilla and butter; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.

Pour the batter into the pan, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe.

Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown.

Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Add whatever filling you want and then roll them up.

Willow stared at the ingredients in front of her.

Yep, that was a look of panic on her face.

Anders waved in Willow's direction. Only he was waving with a fire extinguisher in hand, so it might have been slightly less than comforting, especially given the manic expression he was sporting himself.

"I totally know the feeling," he said.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow waved back, though she still looked nervous. "If we set the kitchen on fire nobody would notice the crepes didn't get made, right?"

Anders actually gave this some serious thought. Sign of desperation? Perhaps. Then again, it's Anders; he takes everything too seriously, sometimes. "Think we can all make it out on time? 'cause I know there was that whole thing about the snickerdoodles, but I kind of really don't want the cooking and baking to be, you know, students."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow looked shocked. "Snickerdoodles are made of people??"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know!" said Anders, who'd developed a slightly greenish tinge. "I heard a rumor about it once, back in the fall or something!"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's awful!" Willow said. "Though now I'm wondering if they taste good in spite of, or because of that."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I never tried them myself," replied Anders, frowning. "And now I'm all curious."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't think that's going to be the surprise final class, do you?" Willow asked.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, gods." Anders bit his lip and tangled floury fingers up in his hair. "I hope not. I mean, Piper seems nicer than that . . ."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I was hoping to do something with goat's blood," Willow said, seriously.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders dropped the fire extinguisher on his foot.

"Like, a stew or something?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, cookies." She looked at him worriedly. "Are you okay?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm fine. Had my foot run over by worse," said Anders with a pretty conspicuous flinch. He gave her a curious glance; hey, if there was one thing he'd learned during sociology class last semester, it was that some places on Earth had pretty interesting cultural aspects. Granted, so did the Colonies, but those were less weird to him.

"So, goat's blood cookies. Are those better with raisins, or chocolate chips?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know," Willow admitted. "I'm hoping to do research. On the one hand you'd think chocolate chips since everything's better with chocolate, but on the other maybe that's too sweet compared to the blood? I wish I could find a recipe."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"You haven't been able to find one online? I thought you could find everything online," Anders said, and shrugged. "I have no idea what goat's blood would taste like. Maybe raisins, so they don't totally overpower the blood?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I found some for pudding and sausages," Willow said. "But cookies are so far proving elusive. I asked Xander - um, my Xander, to ask Anya for me. She used to be a demon. She might know."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"That might be a good bet," said Anders with an encouraging smile. "And now we tackle crepes. Or dodge if they try to tackle us."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"My theory? Lots of butter," Willow said. "They'd have to be slippy enough to flip if we doused the pan with butter, right? And if not - melted butter. Yum!"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders mimed flipping a crepe in a pan with a lot more finesse than he'd probably have had with an actual crepe and pan. "Sounds like a win-win situation."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll man the whisk," Willow said. "Mostly because then I get to feel all Julia Childy. That, and measuring ingredients into your hand like you know how much that is. Which doesn't work out nearly as well with spells as you'd like."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm more of a power mixer man myself." Anders thought that sounded vaguely dirty but wasn't about to say so. "Um, who's Julia Childy?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I get afraid I'll explode flour all over the kitchen if I put it on the wrong setting," Willow said. She started to whisk ingredients together. "Julia Child? She was this chef on TV. She taught people how to make French food, which apparently involves a lot of chicken and butter."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"The exploding flour is fun though," Anders laughed. "Except when you have to clean it up afterwards. 'cause that gets kind of messy, especially if you put the wet stuff in already."

He idly juggled an egg as he watched Willow whisk (yay alliteration), taking mental notes on technique. "I've never seen her show. I watch the Food Network sometimes, but it always gets me hungry and then I get frustrated because I can't make all the fancy foods they do, with the slick plates and everything."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ever watch Iron Chef?" Willow asked. "That one's fun, though I feel bad when they show the chefs actually killing the animals."
