Baking Workshop 6/5, Monday Morning

Piper pointed out today's samples as the students arrived. "We're gonna try some foreign cuisine today. You'll be making crepes, which are French. When you finish making them, feel free to add any filling you want to."

She glanced at the various choices sitting on the counter. "We've got strawberries, bananas, chocolate sauce, various jams, etc. You can even add more than one if you feel like it."

"I'll be around, as usual, if you have questions," Piper added, handing each student a list of instructions.

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Frying Pan

Spatula

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup water

2 eggs

2 tbsp melted butter

2 teaspoons sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs.

Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine.

Add the sugar, vanilla and butter; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.

Pour the batter into the pan, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe.

Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown.

Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Add whatever filling you want and then roll them up.

"You haven't been able to find one online? I thought you could find everything online," Anders said, and shrugged. "I have no idea what goat's blood would taste like. Maybe raisins, so they don't totally overpower the blood?"

"I found some for pudding and sausages," Willow said. "But cookies are so far proving elusive. I asked Xander - um, my Xander, to ask Anya for me. She used to be a demon. She might know."

"That might be a good bet," said Anders with an encouraging smile. "And now we tackle crepes. Or dodge if they try to tackle us."

Re: Bake

"My theory? Lots of butter," Willow said. "They'd have to be slippy enough to flip if we doused the pan with butter, right? And if not - melted butter. Yum!"

Anders mimed flipping a crepe in a pan with a lot more finesse than he'd probably have had with an actual crepe and pan. "Sounds like a win-win situation."

"I'll man the whisk," Willow said. "Mostly because then I get to feel all Julia Childy. That, and measuring ingredients into your hand like you know how much that is. Which doesn't work out nearly as well with spells as you'd like."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm more of a power mixer man myself." Anders thought that sounded vaguely dirty but wasn't about to say so. "Um, who's Julia Childy?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I get afraid I'll explode flour all over the kitchen if I put it on the wrong setting," Willow said. She started to whisk ingredients together. "Julia Child? She was this chef on TV. She taught people how to make French food, which apparently involves a lot of chicken and butter."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-05 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"The exploding flour is fun though," Anders laughed. "Except when you have to clean it up afterwards. 'cause that gets kind of messy, especially if you put the wet stuff in already."

He idly juggled an egg as he watched Willow whisk (yay alliteration), taking mental notes on technique. "I've never seen her show. I watch the Food Network sometimes, but it always gets me hungry and then I get frustrated because I can't make all the fancy foods they do, with the slick plates and everything."

"Ever watch Iron Chef?" Willow asked. "That one's fun, though I feel bad when they show the chefs actually killing the animals."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Iron Chef! Yes!" Anders hopped up and down. "You think it would be suicide if we tried to do something like that at the end of this course?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"You mean like Piper gives us an ingredient and we have the whole class period to make stuff?" Willow asked. "That could be fun! Only no killing things! I put my foot down."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no, no, no, frak no! No killing things." Anders cringed. "And I think we'd need more time than just an hour 'cause we're not that good. Also, I'm not making anything weird like mushroom ice cream."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"More than an hour would be good," Willow agreed. "If it's not baking I'm a little out of my element. Though I guess there could be teams? Pair people up, maybe?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't the Iron Chefs and the challengers have helpers, anyway? Maybe there could be two people who are good at cooking actually coming up with dishes and the rest of the team does all the easy stuff. 'cause you really wouldn't want me trying to make up recipes."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I bet you'd be great at it," Willow said. "Don't guys have a hidden BBQ gene? You could handle all the stuff that involves dealing with fire."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Anders laughed. "Not if you ask my girlfriend. I'm not sure she thinks I should be around fire at all."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Willow thought about it. "Iron Chef Microwave!"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Anders's face lit up. "Now that? I can totally get behind that."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"There could be, like, a popcorn ground, and a best use of reheated leftovers round!" Willow said, getting into it now.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"And a round where everybody tries to get frozen dinners heated for just the perfect amount of time so they're not still frozen but not super hot!"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Oo, yes!" Willow said. "Which is not as easy as it looks because your microwave oven's wattage may vary."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Anders snapped his fingers. "And everyone will have to guess what their microwave's wattage is, because it'll be covered up."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Very clever!" Willow said. "For dessert we could test out melting chocolate without ruining it."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Oooo." Anders whistled. "Yeah, that's a tough one. I always get the container all melty."
