Baking Workshop 6/5, Monday Morning

Piper pointed out today's samples as the students arrived. "We're gonna try some foreign cuisine today. You'll be making crepes, which are French. When you finish making them, feel free to add any filling you want to."

She glanced at the various choices sitting on the counter. "We've got strawberries, bananas, chocolate sauce, various jams, etc. You can even add more than one if you feel like it."

"I'll be around, as usual, if you have questions," Piper added, handing each student a list of instructions.

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Frying Pan

Spatula

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup water

2 eggs

2 tbsp melted butter

2 teaspoons sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs.

Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine.

Add the sugar, vanilla and butter; beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat.

Pour the batter into the pan, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe.

Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown.

Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Add whatever filling you want and then roll them up.

Anders polished off the rest of his sandwich so quickly it was probably unhealthy, grabbed a paper towel and wiped away a smudge of peanut butter from the side of his mouth. "Raspberries, huh? I'll have to keep that one in mind," he said just before the hiccups hit him.

Rolling her eyes, Sam poured a glass of water and handed it to Anders. "You okay?"

He started to gulp the glass of water down just as quickly, but remembered about three gulps in that careful sips were the way to go. "I'm used to it," he admitted. "Cally hasn't gotten me to break that habit yet."

"How's she doing? I haven't seen her in ages."

"She's doing great. Taking first aid, which is probably gonna come in handy especially if I keep tryin' to cook." Anders grinned. "Seems like it's been forever since we all hung out, though. I know I haven't gotten out much lately."

"Yeah, I'd say knowing first aid around this place would be really useful, whether you cook or not," Sam nodded approvingly, then grinned back.

"It has been ages--between graduation and the new people and moving to and from the cabins, it's been kind of hectic for non-dangerous reasons. Which is good, but yeah, I miss walking into a room and knowing people."

"It's been crazy lately, yeah. And it seems like a while since the last birthday party, too. Or was that just an April thing?" Anders shook his head. "Not that we need an excuse to do the hanging out thing."

Re: Bake

"I think some of us with birthdays after April just wanted to celebrate them quietly," Sam told him. "Y'know, without the huge fuss."

"Yeah, I get that." Anders nodded, then blinked. "Huh. I'm gonna be seventeen in a couple of weeks. I totally forgot."

Re: Bake

"When? And are you doing anything special to celebrate?"

Anders pulled out his Palm Pilot and checked the calendar, because he'd had to convert the Colonial calendar to an Earth calendar a while back, and gods knew he wasn't going to try and calculate the exact date off the top of his head all over again. "The twenty-second? And I have no idea. We didn't have any plans yet or anything."

"Have you seen a live baseball game yet? You might like that though I'd recommend going to see the Orioles over seeing the Nationals because the Nats are having a bad, bad year."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He flushed a little bit at the mention of baseball, but shook his head. "Grissom gave me a whole bunch of Nationals tickets go figure but I haven't had a chance to use any of them yet. I should see if any of 'em are for that weekend or something."

Re: Bake

"It's a lot of fun," Sam said enthusiastically. "I get bored watching on television, but there's so much more to experience at a live game that it's easier to pay attention. Sitting out in the sun with a friend, or a significant other, and watching the game with a hot dog and a soda? Doesn't get much better than that."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I love watching on TV, but everybody tells me it's way better live and my player is going to a game tomorrow, whee. Cally's not so into the game, but she says she'll go, as long as I buy her a hot dog." Anders put the Palm Pilot away and started stacking up clean utensils. "I think this frying pan is a total loss."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam looked over at the charred frying pan. "Yeah. I'd say so."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The frying pan got tossed into the trash can with a sad lack of ceremony, though Anders did wince a little bit when it thunked against the bottom of the can. "I'm so ready to call it a day in the kitchen. How 'bout you?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I may be ready to call it a month in the kitchen, but yeah." She wiped down the counters.

"If I wasn't so addicted to baked goods, I'd call it a lifetime in the kitchen," Anders said mournfully. "But no, I have to have my cupcakes, and I can't afford to buy 'em forever." He stowed all the clean gear back where it was supposed to be, picked up his now-empty fire extinguisher, and glanced at the doors.

"Same time next week, with sandbags. But hopefully I'll see you before then, huh?"

"Sounds good. Tell Cally I said hi."
