Archery Workshop #1, 5/23, Danger Shop, Afternoon

As the students entered the Danger Shop, set up like a standard classroom for today, they were greeted by a diminutive, black-and-white Japanese girl in a silk robe, perched on a corner of the teacher's desk munching on a chocolate chip cookie. Next to her were a stack of handouts, a sign-in sheet, and a tray of assorted cookies from Jeff, God of Biscuits.

Written on the board behind the desk was, Sign in. Take a handout and a cookie. Direct any questions to the instructor. Behave. Or else.

Miho studied her students with a critical eye, trying to determine which of them were most likely to shoot one of their classmates by accident or try to take more than one cookie.

Parker sits down and reads the hand-out with intense attention, noting that she's going to need a hair tie, a chest protector, and that those boots she bought for Wilderness Survival might get workout in this class too. Most of the rules are similar to those on the gun range, so she has no problem with them.

She looks around, half-hoping someone has the guts to piss off Miho. It ain't gonna be her.

Gwynn is also reading the hand-out with interest. The rules make sense to her, so she has no problem.

She looks around and sees another girl reading. Minding her manners, she introduces herself.

"Hello. I'm Gwynn."

"Parker." Parker nods to her, and flips through the handout again. "You were one of the ones helping Pippi and Nadia last weekend."

Gwynn nodded. "Yes, that was me. You're the one Pip told me knows all about shoes and clothing?"

"Yesss," Parker said warily. "Why?"

"He said I should talk to you if I wanted clothing advice for the modern times"

"Need a rubber band?" asked Janet, who'd just tied her hair back into a ponytail and had somehow come up with a handful of hair ties that had been buried in the bottom of her backpack all year. "At least the rules are familiar enough, right?"

"True. But I don't think we'll need any hair ties today." Parker nodded toward Miho. "Does she look ready to take us to the range yet?"

"No, but I figured it was best to be prudent where our teacher was concerned," said Janet. She shrugged.

Parker considered that. "A very, very wise philosophy." She looked at the handout, then around the room again. "Think any of them will get killed today, proving you right?"

"I'm hoping she's not allowed to kill any of the students," said Janet. "But then again, one fatality would be a valuable lesson to the rest of us poor souls who signed up for the workshop."

Sam looked over the handout carefully, practically hearing his father's voice behind some of the guidelines, and glanced over at the girl he remembered meeting before...Parker, maybe?

"Do you know why no one's talking to the teacher?" he asked quietly.

And because sometimes she's evil, Parker says, "No. No idea. I'm just reading my handout, I don't know why other people aren't." She paused. Better not to get him completely killed. "Maybe if you raise your hand, she'll call on you and people will start asking questions?"

Sam shifted in his seat, looking a little uncomfortable. "Well, I don't know if I want to be the first one to ask a question. I'm not sure what I'd even ask, this all seems pretty straight forward."

Parker smothered a grin. "But look. It says 'direct all questions to the teacher' on the sign. That implies she's okay with it." She shrugged. "But if you're scared to ask, that's okay. Probably smart."

"I'm not scared," Sam said automatically. "Wait, what do you mean it's probably smart?"

"Well, she did gut a guy just for saying hi, once. Of course, it was a really annoying guy..." Parker frowned thoughtfully. "Maybe if you raise your hand? After all, she can just ignore you if she wants to, then."

Dawn took her life into her own hands and passed Sam a note. Hi! Miss me?

Sam read the note and grinned, replying and passing it back. Of course! It's terrible, I can't sleep, I can't eat...

She stuck her tongue out at him.

Did you hear about what the boneheads next door did to our cabin?

Were you badly serenaded? I think I caught some of that.

Ducks! Stupid ducks! Hey, did you know they're not afraid of moose?

So, what'd you do today?

Sam has to cover his mouth quickly to keep from laughing.

No, I didn't know that, but I guess now I do.

I met Giles.

Dawn did a quick check of Sam's person. Just to see if he was bleeding or bruised. Honest.

Did you have fun?

Yes, I did. He helped me find two books I was looking for, and he was totally nice. He even took the whole roommate thing well.
