Baking Workshop 5/22, FH Home Ec Classroom, Monday Morning

Piper smiles at the students as they show up at the home ec classroom after handwave hearing some sort of announcement letting them know to meet here.

"I'm Piper in case some of you might not know," she says somewhat cheerfully, handing each student a syllabus.

She points out the plate of brownies on the counter in front of her. "I made these for you because that is what we will be baking today. Try one if you'd like. I'm told I make the best brownies ever." She smiles proudly. "We will not be making the kind I brought in, though. They have a secret ingredient and, if I told you what it is, I'd have to vanquish you and no one wants that."

Piper grins to let them know she isn't serious about the vanquishing. She hands each student a list of ingredients and instructions. "I'm not going to lecture you because this workshop is supposed to be fun. So we're gonna get started right away. These instructions are, hopefully, easy to follow. If any of you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask."

Jude grinned at Maia from across the way, sheepishly returning with his new, unbroken eggs and his hair sticking up in blond tufts. "Hey, Maia, bra."

"Jude hey." Maia said with a smile finally freeing up her measuring cups. "How's it going?"

"Pretty good," he replied, carefully setting down the eggs and fencing them in with measuring spoons so that they wouldn't roll away. "Didn't know you were takin' this class," he said as he began measuring dry ingredients. He was surprisingly adept at it for a boy who regularly ran into doorframes and had already dropped two eggs on himself.

"Yeah. It seemed like a good idea." Maia picked up her cocoa can and started to measure the tablespoons out. "My mom was a good cook. I kinda wanted to learn." She said with a smile checking the recipe for a third time to make sure it was indeed six and not five tablespoons. "What about you? You don't seem the cooking type."

Jude chuckled. "I know. But I was workin' at this place called the Stick-It and I had to make all the food so I kinda got the crash course and ended up likin' it." He shot her a mellow smile. "My other random talents include throwing pottery and fountain diving, if ya were interested."

"I have playdough up in my dormroom." Maia said beaming. "It doesn't break." She said with a small amount of satisfaction in case Jude didn't know about the wonders of Playdough. "It's sort of like pottery clay but...well you don't bake it. There's some kinds you can bake though." She said before trailing off and looking at her recipe again. She needed to melt the butter now.

"I know, bra," Jude chuckled. "I love playdough. My mom used to make our own, though." He reached for something and ended up knocking over the bottle of vanilla, catching it before it hit the ground with a minimum of flailing.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia watched him with a smile "You made it?" She said curiously. "To eat?" She glanced down at her brownie mixture as she slowly poured the almost boiling butter into the bowl. "What does it taste like?" It made sense, if Jude's mother made it for them to eat. Afterall the container of playdough did say non-toxic on it.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really salty," Jude replied with another mellow smile. "But ya aren't supposed to eat it, it's still for playing with." He frowned a bit at he poked at his batter, spearing a few lumps of cocoa to break them up.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oooohhh." Maia said finally understanding him. "Right ok. I bet it wouldn't taste very good. Even being salty." She said with a smile as she added the remaining ingredients and started to stab cocoa lumps like Jude. She watched him closly he seemed to know what he was doing a heck of a lot more then she did.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude stabbed a few more lumps before adding a bit more vanilla, setting the bottle down absently, right on the edge of his drying hat. It teetered, still open, and threatened to fall before Jude grabbed it and closed it tightly, setting it aside with a chuckle. "Vanilla hates me right now, bra."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia glanced at it and nodded. "Good thing you moved it then. I could see it shattering on the floor." She said nonchalantly. "It smells good though." Maia said sniffing a spoon full of her chocolate soup looking mixture. "Almost like a brownie."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's a reason we usually get the plastic bottle," he said, unconcerned by his spazzing. "And that would be the preferable smell at the moment. Unless we're not supposed to be making brownies and I got really lost somewhere."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia blushed slightly and sat her spoon down. Looking again at her recipe she started to throw flour onto the pan. She liked this activity and soon was covered in the white powder as a thick layer laid on her pan to keep her brownies from sticking.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude laughed, then sneezed, then laughed some more at her enthusiasm. He brushed a hair off his face, leaving a big smudge of brownie batter on his cheek. as he floured his own pan.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Unable to resist getting to toss more of the flour Maia 'helped' a little by tossing some into his pan with a grin. She turned back to her own pan and poured in her batter, she giggled when she saw the batter on his cheek. After sitting her bowl down she grabbed a towel and wiped his cheek with it. "Brownie mix." She said tossing the towel down and staring at her square pan of brown goo.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude stuck his tongue out - being very mature - and swiped a brownie-covered finger over her nose. "Now you got some too," he chuckled, pouring his own batter and smoothing it down with the spatula. After a moment's consideration, he sprinkled the rest of his pecans on top.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia squealed happily and wiped at her nose. She watched him smooth out his batter with the spatula so before she put her own pan into the oven she gave it a slap or two, just to be on the safe side.

"They should turn out ok huh?" Maia said turning on the oven light and staring down at her brown pan. "I mean if we follow the recipe, it will be perfect like the perfect bunt cake..." Maia said trailing off, for a moment Susan's smile flashed before her and she swallowed hard. I miss you

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perfect bunt cake?" Jude asked, sliding his own pan in and almost burning his hand on the preheated oven. Key word: almost.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia felt her face color just a bit. "Oh I found this recipe, in a magazine for the perfect bunt cake. I uh- well after I learn how to cook I want to make it, for Susan..." Maia said with a swallow.

"You ok? You almost burnt your hand there." She said inclining her head.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude waved a hand, starting to clean up after himself automatically and checking to see if his tuque was dry yet. "Yeah, bra, I'm totally cool. Who's Susan?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"A friend of mine, who graduated the week before last." Maia said turning her head for appearances sake to be checking her brownies, but in reality she was blinking back some tears that stung her eyes. "You would have liked her." Maia had almost called Susan her girlfriend but then, they have never called themselves anything like that. Maybe just lover would suffice.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude noticed the catch in her voice and the quick turn and almost dropped the vanilla yet again. "Aww, that's rough, bra," he said softly. "Miss her?" Bit of a silly question, really.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah I do." She said quietly. "But I get to talk to her on the phone so...it makes me just miss her more I think." Maia said with a sad laugh. Swallowing she stood up and turned her Jude, her eyes a little shiny. "So you want to try my brownies when their done?" She asked in an attempt to lighten the mood again.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Jude let the shiny eyes go and favoured her with a grin. "Sure, bra. As long as you try mine, too."
