Baking Workshop 5/22, FH Home Ec Classroom, Monday Morning

Piper smiles at the students as they show up at the home ec classroom after handwave hearing some sort of announcement letting them know to meet here.

"I'm Piper in case some of you might not know," she says somewhat cheerfully, handing each student a syllabus.

She points out the plate of brownies on the counter in front of her. "I made these for you because that is what we will be baking today. Try one if you'd like. I'm told I make the best brownies ever." She smiles proudly. "We will not be making the kind I brought in, though. They have a secret ingredient and, if I told you what it is, I'd have to vanquish you and no one wants that."

Piper grins to let them know she isn't serious about the vanquishing. She hands each student a list of ingredients and instructions. "I'm not going to lecture you because this workshop is supposed to be fun. So we're gonna get started right away. These instructions are, hopefully, easy to follow. If any of you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Pretty good," Willow said. "We had a slumber party last night. Fun was had. Though turns out one of my cabin-mates is a guy."

"Slumber party, huh? Sounds like a good time." She sighed and decided there was nothing to do for it but attempt to bake. She began assembling the ingredients she needed. "A guy? Yeah, I've got a few of those in my cabin, too. Which one's with you?"

"MacBeth," Willow said. She started flouring her pan. "He seems nice enough, if totally intimidated by how he's rooming with all girls."

"Our guys are not at all intimidated," Sam said, chuckling as she began measuring things out according to the recipe. Ish. There may have been an overabundance of salt, since Sam grabbed the tablespoon instead of the teaspoon. Oops. "In fact, I think they're looking on it as a dating opportunity. Who else is in your cabin with you?"

Willow set about cracking eggs into a bowl. She then set about trying to remove eggshells because she had once again tried to break eggs one-handed, and it turned out she still sucked at doing that.

"Hermione, Marie, and Kaylee on my side," Willow said. "And MacBeth, Lyta, Mac though I don't know if I know that yet and Cordelia."

The last was said in the same tone one would have used to comment on roaches being found in the cabin as well.

"Er, what's wrong with Cordelia?" She asked, trying to remember if she'd met her or not as she turned around to preheat the oven to 375.

"She's Cordelia," Willow said, as though this were self-explanatory. Finally successful in her egg shell hunt, she whisked the eggs together. She then added the sugar and vanilla extract, which wasn't exactly how the recipe worded it but she was nothing if not a hacker in all things.

"Uh...huh," Sam said, trying to figure that out as she floured the pan like she'd seen Willow do earlier. It went relatively well (minus some flour on the counter) and Sam relaxed. Maybe she could cook.

Willow melted her butter in the microwave. In theory you should do that in small bursts so you don't overnuke it, but again Willow didn't concern herself overmuch with particulars if she could get the result she wanted faster.

"Who's in your cabin?" she asked.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um..." Sam measured out the flour, since she had it out anyway. Again, this seemed to go well, other than getting some on the counter. "Me, Alec, Dean, Sam who is Dean's brother, Jack Harkness, D'anna Biers, Jaye, and Cedric."

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oo, I know most of them!" Willow said. "You've got nice people. Though is it weird rooming with all those boys?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, I'm pretty used to it," Sam said, "I had a brother growing up, plus I spent a lot of years in close quarters with guys."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've spent a lot of time with Xander but it's not exactly the same thing," Willow said. She mixed all of her ingredients together, stirring with a rubber spatula. "For starters I can do this without him trying to get his hands into it to taste."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Funny, I've never had that problem," Sam said, studying the contents of her mixing bowl, which looked suspiciously lumpy.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow poured a fairly smooth batter into her pan, then put it into her pre-heated oven. She set the timer and then looked at Sam's. "Huh. You could try stirring it more?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay..." Willow, after all, seemed to know more about baking than she did. And that wasn't making her feel inadequate at all, nope. She stirred with the rubber spatula a few more times, then peered in. "I think it's lumpier now."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Huh." Willow peered at it. "Did you add the nuts? Because those would be lumpy."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam pointed to the pecans still on the counter. "Nope. I opted out."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Me too. Hum." Willow looked thoughtful. "Are you against the nuts as a concept? Because you could put them in anyway and if people notice lumps you could say they were nuts."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't really like pecans," Sam said, "but it's not like I'd be eating my own cooking anyway..."

She knew better.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Chocolate chips?" Willow suggested.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"I like the way you think, Willow," Sam said, "there's very little that can't be fixed by adding chocolate."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"And whipped cream," Willow nodded. "There's very little that can't be hidden with a can of Reddi-Whip."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Except turkey," Sam muttered. "Er, hypothetically."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I'm not good with that," Willow said. "Mixing bowls I can cope with. It's like science class, only you can eat it. Well you can eat science stuff too but it might kill you."
