Baking Workshop 5/22, FH Home Ec Classroom, Monday Morning

Piper smiles at the students as they show up at the home ec classroom after handwave hearing some sort of announcement letting them know to meet here.

"I'm Piper in case some of you might not know," she says somewhat cheerfully, handing each student a syllabus.

She points out the plate of brownies on the counter in front of her. "I made these for you because that is what we will be baking today. Try one if you'd like. I'm told I make the best brownies ever." She smiles proudly. "We will not be making the kind I brought in, though. They have a secret ingredient and, if I told you what it is, I'd have to vanquish you and no one wants that."

Piper grins to let them know she isn't serious about the vanquishing. She hands each student a list of ingredients and instructions. "I'm not going to lecture you because this workshop is supposed to be fun. So we're gonna get started right away. These instructions are, hopefully, easy to follow. If any of you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Okay..." Willow, after all, seemed to know more about baking than she did. And that wasn't making her feel inadequate at all, nope. She stirred with the rubber spatula a few more times, then peered in. "I think it's lumpier now."

"Huh." Willow peered at it. "Did you add the nuts? Because those would be lumpy."

Sam pointed to the pecans still on the counter. "Nope. I opted out."

"Me too. Hum." Willow looked thoughtful. "Are you against the nuts as a concept? Because you could put them in anyway and if people notice lumps you could say they were nuts."

"I don't really like pecans," Sam said, "but it's not like I'd be eating my own cooking anyway..."

She knew better.

"Chocolate chips?" Willow suggested.

"I like the way you think, Willow," Sam said, "there's very little that can't be fixed by adding chocolate."

Re: Bake

"And whipped cream," Willow nodded. "There's very little that can't be hidden with a can of Reddi-Whip."

Re: Bake

"Except turkey," Sam muttered. "Er, hypothetically."

Re: Bake

"Yeah, I'm not good with that," Willow said. "Mixing bowls I can cope with. It's like science class, only you can eat it. Well you can eat science stuff too but it might kill you."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think that depends on what you're making, but I never thought of it like science before," she looked at the bowls in a new light. "Science I can do."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh yeah," Willow said. "Like there's measuring, and being precise, and following instructions only not when they're stupid and some steps you can so skip even if they tell you not to. But pretty sciency."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"You can skip steps? How do you know which steps are skippable and which ones aren't? How do you know when the instructions are stupid?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Depends on the recipe," Willow said. "And sometimes you don't know until you get to the very end. In my past I have made things like Chocolate Surprise. You don't want to know what the suprise was."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam kinda did, but she couldn't say anything now. "I think my recipe today's kind of a lost cause," she poked the batter again, "but I'll definitely have to try it your way next week."

Re: Bake

Willow looked at the syllabus. "Next week is carrot cake. Okay, there might be some panic here. Adding in vegetables is a whole new dynamic for me."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe you can pretend they're like orange chocolate chips?" Sam suggested hopefully.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, exactly!" Willow nodded. No, she was not pre-freaking about possibly failing a class. Why would you think so? "I'm sure that will work."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-22 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, good," Sam nodded, unsure whether that strategy would actually work.
