Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

Elizabeth's eyes widened. "Puppy!" she squealed exclaimed.

"Hi!" she said brightly, "This is Bruiser Woods, and I'm Elle Woods...we're here from Harvard for the summer." tumbled out as she scooped Bruiser from the bag.

"Bruiser? Make friends." she said cheerfully as she held him closer.

"I'm Elizabeth Weir, and, well, I've been at Fandom since last September," Elizabeth said, holding out a hand towards the dog. "Harvard, huh?"

"Uh huh!" she said, nodding. Passing Bruiser off (who was clearly used to such treatment and wiggled and licked at Elizabeth's chin) Elle smiled wider. "I just graduated from Harvard Law and now I'm here for the summer to be a camp counselor or something."

"Oh, cool," Elizabeth grinned, fussing and petting Bruiser (also clearly used to such attention). "I'm looking at Harvard myself. For undergrad at the moment, obviously. Maybe law school afterwards. What workshop are you going to have? Something law-related?"

"Oh, no. I guess I'm taking the place of another teacher who left, so I'm filling the communication slot." she said, then leaned in, "but my undergrad degree is in fashion, so between you and me I might have to fake it for a while."

She backed up a bit and giggled, "But that's ok. Summer camp is for fun...and tanning. And campfires, right? No one wants to waste their summer studying law." she said seriouly...serious-like...and made a pffft sound.

"You went from fashion to law?" Elizabeth asked, eyes wide, before she remembered herself and that she was talking to a teacher. "Yeah, CJ - our last communications teacher - left last week. I took speech with her."

Elizabeth nodded, grinning. "Something like that," she said, although she knew that she'd spend a summer studying law or something like that.

She nodded enthusiatically, "I applied to Harvard to follow Warner, who I thought I loved but I found out he was a loser, and he propposed to Vivian but she dropped him too because even his grandmother's diamond wasn't reason enough to marry him, and she looked way happier at graduation anyhow and she's like one of my best friends but my other best friend Serena was supposed to take this job because she's a fabulous communicator but she had a really unfortunate accident involving hair dye and perm solution so now she's bald and because I'm a good friend, I'm here!"

The fact that she doesn't need to breathe through all of that is truly stunning, and Bruiser stares at her.

Elizabeth just stares too for a minute, trying to take everything in.

"Um, wow. Okay. You're... pretty good at communicating yourself."

"You think so? I've had a lot of experience with speeches and defense and stuff. One time..." and she launches into another handwavey story about her sorority that requires little breathing except for a couple of dramtic pauses. Bruiser gives Elizabeth a 'run for your life' look, then wriggles into a more comfortable position.

Elizabeth's well used to at least looking as though she's interested and paying attention. She "mmmhmms" and nods in hopefully the right places.

And has a horrific thought about what would happen if Ms Woods breeded with Rodney.

Her eyes widened slightly, and she chokes back an exclamation of horror.

"...so then I said that there is no excuse for that shade of green, especially if you don't have chestnut hair and she looked at me like I totally never read Cosmo and...Elizabeth, are you ok?" she said cocking her head and looking worried.

"Fine," Elizabeth said brightly. "Just horrified by green?"

"Oh, I know. The things people put next to their faces, I mean, ugh. Like the army...olive? Please. But then i guess everyone looks equally ill. People just really need to think before they dress." she nodded seriously, betraying her real ideology.

"I think they think that it's good for camoflague?" Elizabeth suggested helpfully. She had been much happier with the Atlantis gray for their uniforms. "You're lucky you missed the laundry machines going on strike."

"Oh. My. God. You can't be serious. Your laundry people went on strike?" she said, clearly horrified.

"Not the people. The machines," Elizabeth nodded. "Held our clothing hostage and everything."

"The machines?!?" she squeaked. "They just held them...didn't ruin them? Because I have no idea how you'd prosecute a Kenmore."

"All was returned freshly laundered. Thankfully," Elizabeth said. "I think we were all pretty much down to the dregs of our closets by that point."

"How horrifying! Do things like that happen around here often?" she asked, tipping her head to the side and bringing her fingertips to her mouth as she quickly made plans to have clothes set aside for just such an occasion.

"Odd things with no explanation? Yes," Elizabeth nodded. "That was the first involving clothes though."

"Nothing involving shoes." Yet Elizabeth left the last part unspoken. She didn't want to scare Elle too much on the first day.

"Whew, well, that's a relief." she said. "So you've been here for a while...what's the deal? Some of these people, uh" she looked atound and noticed the tall boy with the tail and the girls with the wands, "aren't the type who go to CULA or Harvard. That I'm aware of." she asked diplomatically.

Elizabeth grinned. "Fandom High, and indeed, the island of Fandom itself, is interdimensional. Through the wonders of, well, I don't know what, we have students and teachers from a variety of times and locations. And some of these different universes involve things like magic, say."
