Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

"Odd things with no explanation? Yes," Elizabeth nodded. "That was the first involving clothes though."

She sighed with relief, then looked up horrified and asked, "What about shoes?"

"Nothing involving shoes." Yet Elizabeth left the last part unspoken. She didn't want to scare Elle too much on the first day.

"Whew, well, that's a relief." she said. "So you've been here for a while...what's the deal? Some of these people, uh" she looked atound and noticed the tall boy with the tail and the girls with the wands, "aren't the type who go to CULA or Harvard. That I'm aware of." she asked diplomatically.

Elizabeth grinned. "Fandom High, and indeed, the island of Fandom itself, is interdimensional. Through the wonders of, well, I don't know what, we have students and teachers from a variety of times and locations. And some of these different universes involve things like magic, say."

Her jaw dropped and she stared at Elizabeth unblinking for a long time until Bruiser yipped out a sharp bark.

"Whoa." she said insightfully.

"Well," she said, trying so very hard to process, "I guess every campus has it's own culture. Like when I went from CULA to Harvard? Oh. My. God. You've never seen so much tweed in your life." she said as she scooped Bruiser up again. "As long as people are just accepted for what they are and don't have to change into militant lesbians or be mean or anything, I can deal." she held Bruiser up. "We can deal with it, huh, Bruiser?" she asked and was treated to a sharp bark in return that was probably some kind of agreement.

"It's not all tweed, right?" Elizabeth asked nervously, wondering if she'd be better off with Yale or Columbia. Or would they be worse. She nodded. "Fandom is a place where everyone is accepted. It's pretty great, actually."

"Well..." she said with a dramatic pause, "It's not all tweed, but there are some serious 'bless-her-heart's there. I mean, I get the whole Birks with socks thing? I just cannot condone it." she said and nodded with a sympathetic look in her eyes for the fashion victims.

"I'm sure I'll manage to survive fashion disasters," Elizabeth nodded. "We get odd mixes of fashion around here, because of the whole interdimensional thing."

"Really?" she asked, fascinated, "I can't wait to see what people come up with. I had a real fear it might be shabby-camp-chic, and I just don't see a reason for that at all."

"You know, you'd get on really well with Parker," Elizabeth said, nodding.

"Oh, really? Parker?" she asked "I mean, wow, I think I'm going to really love it here. You're so wonderful, and now you're helping me make friends! You're the best, Elizabeth!"

Elizabeth grinned. "It's nice just to help people settle down and feel like they belong. I was one of the junior reps on the StuCo this past year, so I think that it's part of my obligation to help merge the new with the old."

"You were a council rep? Oh my God, I loved that when I was in school. This is like the coolest! It's like I never even left L.A.!"

Elizabeth nodded. "Both times. I'm a sucker for punishment apparently," she grinned. "Especially as I'll probably run again next year." She laughed. "Virginia's a bit cooler than L.A. I think you'll find, especially come winter. But you've survived New England winters, so it'll be fine!"

"Have you ever seen the snow? It was like a little miracle, even when it was three feet deep! It was just so pretty and white and quiet. Is it like that here? Thick and cold and all sleigh rides and snowball fights?"

"I was born in Connecticut, and spent some time in Massachusetts as well," Elizabeth nodded. "So, I've seen lots of snow up there." She's also seen lots of snow in Antartica. If there's one thing she's seen enough of in her life, it's snow. She choked slightly. "There was a huge snow fight at the beginning of the semester," she said seriously.

"How cool is that? This sounds like it's a great school for socializing and getting together. All diverse and inclusive. It's like paradise!"

"Oh it is," Elizabeth nodded. "The second floor is the heart of all the life in the dorms really. We throw the best parties too."

At that declaration her smile fell and she pouted a bit. "I don't think I'm allowed upstairs. I need to read all this stuff still, but I'm pretty sure that teachers have to stay downstairs. That's not fair at all." she whined.

"I'm sure the parties will move now it's the summer," Elizabeth said quickly. "We had a fire by the beach which was pretty cool. And now it's warmer and lighter longer, we can spend more time outside. Besides. Camp. I'm fearing tents."

"Tents?" she asked, perking back up almost immediately. "Parties on the beach? Okay, this might work out after all, because daddy got me the coolest tent (http://www.amanresorts.com/jpgs/i-khas_30.jpg) ever and he'll send it out if I ask."

"It might not be tents. I'm quite hoping it's not tents actually," Elizabeth grimaced slightly. Tents bought back bad memories of touring war zones. "But, yeah. Definitely outdoor parties. Or there's Caritas in town. That's pretty popular."
