Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. That's what the mingling section is for!

[OOC: All right folks, have at it!]

Greg stared at the girl.

Because wow. Pretty.

"Um. Hi," he said, finally remembering his manners.

Isabel smiled back. "Hi, I'm Isabel. Welcome to Fandom."

"Greg," he said, pointing to himself. "My name's, um, Greg, that is."

"Nice to meet you," she said. "What brings you here to Fandom?"

"Parentals decided to send me to camp," he shrugged. "No idea what made them pick this one - Mom liked the brochure a lot, and they're letting me keep my stuff, so I'm happy with it."

"This is the first time I'm doing summer camp as well. I think it'll be fun," Isabel said. "So what sort of stuff do you have? Obviously not weapons if they're letting you keep it."

Greg grinned. "Chemicals. Hardcore science geek here," he said.

"Really? One of my friends at home is all into science," she said. "She wants to go to Harvard and study to be a molecular biologist. They let you keep all your chemicals? Aren't some of them dangerous? Which means they'll be great to have around whenever this sessions monster strikes."

"Well, it's mostly the compounds, since I don't have any arsenic or anything lying around," he said with a rueful smile. "Something like magnesium or sodium on its own is perfectly harmful, and together they make bath salts. But if you get the right combination of chemistry and basic element - say, fire, for instance - then you've got a nice, shiny, little explosion there."

"Be careful, there are a lot of people around here that would like the idea of things going Boom. Of course that would probably liven thing up a bit," she laughed. "So what has everyone else told you about this place?"

"Gremlins, demons...." Greg sighed. "I'm really not buying any of it, just so you know."

"I had the same reaction. Then I saw the purple dragon." Isabel shrugged, "And you'd think I'd be better prepared for something like all thing considered."

"You'll believe soon enough, probably the first time you get a random bucket of slime dumped over your head."

"Slime?" He wrinkled his nose and then snickered. "Sounds like something I'd do to Nicole, back when I was a callow youth who resorted to such tricks," he added, blushing.

"Ahhh, younger sister?" she asked, smiling a bit at the blush. "I have a brother, I can only guess what you did to her. But this slime was more random, it came out of nowhere and would cover you in ick."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Older sister," he corrected. "She'll be a sophomore at UCLA this fall. But...okay, where did it come from? Is there some kind of precipitation around that might evaporate into this slime stuff?"

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"UCLA? Occasionally when I think that far ahead UCLA sounds like a neat place to go."

Isabel shrugged, "It just appeared, usually triggered by the word 'I don't know'. It sounds bizarre, but I swear it's the truth. Last week the washing machines were somehow claiming the clothes people were wearing as ransom."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Greg stared.

"You mean the washing machines broke and so people were being hyperbolic?"

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, the washing machines chose to stop working for a few days," she explained with a perfectly straight face. "And when they started working again, they spent a day randomly magically vanishing the clothes people were wearing. I guess the figure the embarassment was a good payment."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um. I don't...believe in magic?" Greg said tentatively. "So...there's got to be a normal explanation."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you believe in aliens?" Isabel asked. She was only smirking a little bit.

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not really? But moreso than magic. I'll believe in aliens when I get a little more evidence," he replied.

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Does this count as evidence?" Isabel asked as she held out a hand toward the food table. An apple rose up and floated over, landing gently in her outstretched hand.

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Greg stared for almost a full minute before walking the area between Isabel and the table, waving a hand around. "Okay, I give up. Where's the wire?"

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"No wire," she laughed. "Alien-fu. Fandom's a weird place. Not only do we have gremlins, demons, and a vampire. We have a few non-terrestrial students as well."

Re: Mingle/Meet the Newbies

[identity profile] like-a-sponge.livejournal.com 2006-05-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"...okay, seriously, how did you do that?" he asked, boggling.
