Welcome Party for the Summer Students and Staff

Despite the slightly overcast sky, the weather is still good for welcoming all of the new arrivals for the Fandom High summer session. The graduation decorations (and gremlin debris) have been cleared from the front lawn, and replaced with tables of information packets, food, and drinks. A series of signs point the students to the information table first, where they can pick up their room assignments from the office drones, and then continue on to the food tables to mingle.

And no, there are no inflatable gremlins around today. It's far too early to start scaring the new folks. ~~That's what the mingling section is for!~~

Greg was staring again, and not just because he thought she was hot.

"...are you trying to tell me you're an alien?"

"I'm an alien-human hybrid," Isabel said with a small smile. "I'm not going to turn green or grow scales or anything. I just have a few extra skills to help me along."

"Yeah, I was going to say that you're awfully pretty for an alien."

And then he blushed dark, dark red, because wow, had he not meant to say that aloud.

"I just mean, um, based on what the movies show and stuff. Anyone's pretty next to ET, right?" Greg laughed nervously.

Isabel started to laugh and then stopped when she saw the blush. "Thank you," she said sincerely, blushing just a bit herself. "I do admit, it's much easier to get through life without looking like something that should be featured on the Z-Cases."

"I'd guess as much," Greg nodded. "So, um. Are you like, a sophomore or junior or what?"

Segue? What segue?

"I'm a junior, how about you?" Isabel asked. Hopefully now Greg would be a little more prepared for the insanity that was Fandom after that display. "And did you find out who you're living with?"

"I'm a junior, too. And I'm rooming with a guy named Peter Parker, on the third floor?" Greg said, consulting his packet again.

"You're rooming with Peter?" Isabel said with a bright smile. "You'll like him. He's probably my best friend here at Fandom."

"Oh, cool," Greg said, grinning. "I've never had a roommate before. I'd hate for it to be someone uncooperative or whatver."

"No, he's great. He's also a big science guy himself. I think you'll get along just fine," she said.

"Ooh." Greg's eyes gleamed. "Fellow science geek. Good. There was some kid earlier who was all mad at me for being kind of into the whole jock thing. Hate for that to happen again."

"Honestly? We don't have many jock types here," Isabel said. "A lot of folks hit the gym and work out but you won't find that football player herd mentality. So I don't think you have to worry about being stuffed in a locker. Well, unless the locker happens to be hungry."

"...see, I almost believe that," he said with a smirk, quirking a finger at her. "I do some jock-type stuff, but my passion's science and that's what got me...well, yes, shoved in lockers. And then less pleasant things."

"I haven't seen it myself. But I have friends that have spent time in it. Locker 327. Avoid it," she warned.

"I'm at the gym often enough. Aeryn's been teaching me to spar which is fun and I do some cardio work on the elliptical trainer. Although now that the weather's better I need to get out and run some. I think you'll be safe here."

"Oh, you run? That's my big thing." He shrugged. "I did track and field at San Gabriel High. Which didn't help all that much with the popularity deal due to also being chess club president...."

"I don't do track or anything like that. Mostly I do it to keep in shape. Which is very important around here," she said motioning with her head towards the dessert table. "Otherwise I'd be huge. I had a friend who was in the chess club. He tried to teach me once. It didn't go so well."

"It's easy once you get the hang of thinking ahead," Greg offered. "I could teach you, or something, if you ever wanted to try learning again."

"It's your patience," Isabel grinned. But if you're willing to risk it? Maybe the first rainy afternoon?"

"Sure," Greg said, running a hand through his hair. "And I am very patient. Patient is my middle name. Except not really as my middle name is actually something Norwegian and unfortunate."

"Perhaps its's actually Norwegian for patient," Isabel laughed. "Either that or maybe it means 'he who tempts fate by trying to teach chess moves to those who cannot learn them'"

"Maybe. I'll ask my mom - she's the one who picked it," Greg said, rolling his eyes. "I think it means 'intelligent' or something, though. Definitely not 'impossibly smooth.'"

"There's nothing wrong with intelligent," she said firmly. "And don't worry about being smooth around here. Expect to flail on a regular basis."

"Excellent. I am an awesome flailer," Greg grinned.

"You're going to fit right in then."
